I have to apologize, when I took on the position of photographer and writer for Call of the Wild I honestly thought I could keep up both blogs. I can't, no matter how hard I try there are just not enough hours left in the day. I will keep this blog active in case I need to express something that my voice on ChicagoNow can't. Chicago Wolves Fire Coach Granato and Christie!

It has been a long season of losses for Chicago Wolves fans and the rumors of a coaching change have been flying thick and fast. Today at 12:37 the Wolves front office announced that Head Coach Don Granato and Assistant Coach Jason Christie services were no longer required by the club. In the brief association Powderhornhockey had with Don Granato he was accessible and open. We wish him and his family well in where ever life takes him.

Tonight there is a swirl of activity and speculation regarding the men or women that will replace these coaches. Many names are being mentioned from several leagues and states. For now the Wolves are remaining quiet and are sticking to their plans to announce the new personnel before Fridays game. Oh, it is going to be a busy week on the fan boards until game time Friday!

Davy Phillips Update, A Giant Still Walks Among Us...

Last July a contact in Northern Ireland wrote me with the news that “a Giant was going to walk among ye.” Davy Phillips was going to have a try out at the Black Hawks prospect camp. To say the least there was excitement in Belfast among Giants fans. A few days later I found myself watching David Phillips, as the roster listed him show of his skills at camp. He impressed me as a solid stay at home defense man who, bless him could be counted on to stick with a goalie. Phillips looked like the product of good coaching, ready for the AHL and a good fit for Rockford.

After his last scrimmage with the Blackhawks Patrick Kissane and I did a brief interview with him where he was noncommittal but confident considering his future in hockey. The major difference between the European game and what he had experienced in Chicago was size of ice and difference in training of the players. He seemed a young man living on the cusp of his dreams.

Since those moments in the United Center “Phily “ as he is called by his fellow IceHogs has signed an American Hockey League contract, moved into his flat and is adjusting to life in the US. He seems well matched with Rockford, an arena where they dance for every goal and sing chants to the opposing goalie. Much like Davy's previous home with the Belfast Giants. Last Saturday I had a chance to meet with him again after a game. When asked what is the major adjustment he has had to make, again it is the size of the ice. The small ice we play on in North America compared with the larger European ice makes for a faster game. It also demands a quicker mental and physical response time from players. Philips stated he now has to “think faster” on the ice specifically due to this.

There have also been alterations in his conditioning, a core muscle regimen has been added as part of post game cool downs and individual electrolyte drinks. A chance from the single flavor and brand he had in Belfast.

Apparently it hasn't all been training and nutrition. When asked what is his favorite American food he thought a minute and answered “ I don't know if you can call them food, but Reeses Peanut Butter Cups” Good choice Davy!

Chicago Wolves Lose Home Opener to Milwaukee 3:2

Sad but true the Wolves lost their home opener to old rivals the Milwaukee Admirals 3:2 at the Allstate arena on October 3rd. The home crowd left the arena hoping for better things from what looks to be one of the most gifted line ups the Wolves have ever seen but one that simply played 20 minutes of hockey on opening night. Coach Granato has presented fans this year with a tasty mix heavy with vets and as light on youngsters as possible. Returnees include Jason Krog, Kevin Doell, Brett Sterling, Spencer Machaeck,Grant Lewis, Nathan Oystrick , Yes NATHAN OYSTRICK sent down from a blueline heavy Atlanta and Joey Crabb.

The current hot gossip is that veteran Chris Chelios is set to sign with the Wolves. Indeed he is going to skate with the team on Monday and that. is all the Wolves office is willing to confirm. Like Atlanta the Wolves are blueline heavy if Chelios does join the team as a player they will have to show one on the roster the door. To my eyes the one most likely to see the gate is Brian Sipotz.

There have been big changes happening behind the scenes at Powderhornhockey, it is a great pleasure to announce that a new sister blog has been created at ChicagoNow.com. The blog is entitled "Call of the Wild " a nod to it's primary subject the Chicago Wolves. You can reach it easily by it's link http://tiny.cc/wolves89. This new challenging assignment is going to ask the most of me as a artist and as a photographer, I'm looking forward to it!

The Belfast Giants are having some difficult days. They are below 500 and are struggling with a near nonexistent PP and are simply unable to stay out of the sin bin. The one bright spot seems to be Sean McMorrows dance card which seems to be filling up. In last Saturdays game it was reported that not only did he have a fight but he impressed Panther fans by standing in the tunnel and flexing his muscles for the fans amusement gaining him a game misconduct. That's the Sean McMorrow we know and love!

Rumblings of the Giant

Ohhh there are rumblings of discontent from Giant fans and followers alike. The season has barely started and they have not done well, if I'm reading the statics correctly they got their first power play goals this weekend. Yesterday they lost in a heart breaker to the Coventry Blaze and today in a 2:0 shut out to the Newcastle Vipers. Possibly the one man feeling the pressure the most in Belfast City is Canadian Sean McMorrow. A classic old school enforcer McMorrow has not only had a blank dance card this season but there have been reports of players refusing enter into banter with him. This has to place the man brought over to protect skill players and fulfill a role on the team, all be it partially entertainment, difficult. There were reports of him leaving the box in the second period for a shift, falling forward and leaving the ice promptly, hopefully unhurt. The new sheriff in town must be one frustrated guy by now. However it is early days, if there are chemistry problems disrupting the locker room Coach Thornton needs to get on the stick. As for the PP and the dodgy penalty kill- time for more than a few long captain's practices.

I found a bit of history while researching another matter, the story of Hockey's first professional woman goalie. I'm not going to retell it the story is his and most importantly hers.

'How pro hockey's first woman goalie took the world by storm-right here in Marquette-as told by her coach.

With the tremendous growth of girl's hockey, especially here in the far north, I think it would be interesting to the sport's fans and female players to where when and where the first woman hockey player made her debut and how she fared. It happened in October 1969 at the old Palestra Ice Arena in Marquette. It came at opening tryouts for the Marquette Iron Rangers when all comers war invited to show their skills. I was the coach for the Iron Rangers, a very strong senior United States Hockey League team, and the woman player was Karen Koch (pronounced "Cook") from Gibraltar, Michigan.

In those days the first night of Iron Ranger practice was a combination of a happening, a civic event, and a circus with some serious hockey mixed in. Several players from the previous season were signed to contracts and two or three good players were signed or about to sign. Then, there were the usual ten to fifteen guys who either felt they were good enough to make the team, had been goaded into trying out by their friends, or had bragged about their hockey skills all summer. Now it was time to "put up or shut up!"

In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula it was every young hockey player’s dream back then to someday get paid for playing hockey. The Iron Rangers, or some other USHL team was usually their only practical chance to get paid for playing. Salaries ranged from $25 per game for marginal rookies to $100 or more per game for top-notch players with a Division I college, minor league experience or occasionally a former NHL player on the way to retirement. The USHL was a good deal for many excellent hockey players because they could hold down full-time jobs and still get some decent money for playing a game they probably would have played for fun.

Besides, in those days there were only eight or nine NHL teams (the first expansion took place the previous Year, 1968). At that time, the USHL had ninety-five percent of the best American hockey players, many Canadian Junior "A" graduates who had recently graduated from U.S. Division I universities and were not quite good enough for the NHL but wanted to continue playing while they started their chosen careers.

The league was strong and the Iron Rangers were the defending champions. Interest in the team for the coming year was extremely high, so fan attendance at the first practice was high as well. By 1969 I had coached for eighteen seasons, so I was used to all kinds of hype and confusion. I had a pretty good idea which players I could count on, which new players should make the team and how to let down gently those who simply were not good enough to play. Consequently the Iron Rangers always had one or two guys coming out of nowhere to become solid team members. The best example was the Carlson/Hanson Brothers, later famous for the movie Slap Shot.

I got a big surprise. Our regular goalie was Brian Lunney, who had been sent to us by the Toronto Maple Leafs via the Canadian Olympic Team. Outnumber One backup was Lonnie Lytaikainen, a local kid who showed great promise. Both were on the ice along with two goalies I had never seen before and hadn't expected. After a brief talk to the entire group (four goalies and about twenty-five players), we did some preliminary skating drills and easy shooting drills so everyone had a chance to show what they had. Of course, our best goalie looked good, our backup looked pretty good, but one of the two newcomers couldn't stop a basketball with a snowshoe. The other one looked surprisingly quick and made some nice saves in spite of being small.

We'd been working for twenty minutes when Barry Cook, our captain, skated up to me and said, "Coach, did you know that little squirt of a goalie is a girl?"

"What!" I said. "How do you know?"

"One of the kids from Northern (Michigan University) told me," he said.

I quickly asked him to take the practice so I could talk to her myself. She had given no indication that she was a woman. All players were required to wear helmets, so with the helmets and goalie pads it was impossible to tell she was a female. I motioned her off to the side where we could talk without being run into or hit by a puck. She was extremely apprehensive and wouldn’t look at me. (I found out later that she had expected me to kick her off the ice).

Finally she told me her name was Karen Koch, she was eighteen years old and she had enrolled at Northern Michigan University specifically to try out for the Iron Rangers. She had been playing hockey and lacrosse with the boys in Gibraltar ever since she could remember. She went on to say that none of the senior teams in the Detroit area would give her a tryout. She said she had heard nothing but good things about the Iron Rangers and felt she could make the team. She desperately didn't want to be cut without a fair tryout.

I thought to myself, A girl goalie...what if she gets hurt? Where is she going to change clothes? Just how good is she? For one of the few times in my life I didn't know what to do. She had done nothing to justify cutting her. So I told her we should see how well she did and that she'd be given a fair tryout.

In subsequent practices she showed remarkable ability. Her only drawback was her size. Both of our goalies were big guys. They stopped more pucks by accident than she did on purpose.

Hockey's First Female Pro, Karen Koch

Koch's presence on the squad brought complaints from the veteran players, but even they admitted she was surprisingly good and probably equal to our regular backup goalie. Their griping was far overshadowed by the national publicity she generated after her photo was run in the daily and weekly newspapers. We got calls from the Associated Press, United Press International, Reuters and newspapers, radio and TV stations from all over the U.S. and Canada. It was a major news story. And, all the while Karen Koch was stopping pucks and earning her place on the squad. When it came time to cut the team down to eighteen players and two goalies; I changed the number and kept seventeen players and three goalies, including Lunney, Lytaikainen and Koch. Koch signed a contract for $40 per game. As far as I know she was the first female player ever to do so in the world.

She played as well as any of our previous backup goalies when I was able to use her. She wasn't solid enough to start and play regularly because the league simply was too good. Word of her being on the squad preceded our first game of the season in the Canadian Soo. She caused so much interest that Soo officials called and insisted that she be announced as the starting goalie to swell attendance. City staff arranged for the Mayor of Sault St. Marie, Ontario, who had been a pretty good hockey player in years past, to take a pre-game penalty shot at Karen-the Mayor going in all-alone against the world's only female goalie. Her presence, along with the highly anticipated "shootout”, filled the arena and she received a standing ovation when she stopped the Mayor's shot. He received taunting boos as he returned to the stands. She played the first period, giving up tow goals on twelve shots as the Iron Rangers left the ice trailing 2-0. Lunney finished the game with the Iron Rangers winning 5-3.

Later on Koch again filled the Green Bay Arena when the rumor spread that she was going to start against the Bobcats. I hadn't planned to start her, but the sight of more than 5,000 fans in the arena changed my mind. I decided it would be good for hockey and for the Green Bay coffers. She played half of the first period but had to come out when she took one of Paul Coppo's slap shots on the knee above her leg pad and below her thigh pad. The score was 1-1 at the time.

As the season wore on Koch reached a plateau in her ability, partially caused by her small size. She never missed a practice and finally was accepted by all but the most chauvinist guys on the team. Unfortunately, she seemed to have a "death wish" for a facial scar caused by a hockey puck in a USHL game. She simply and consistently defied my orders to wear a mask while playing. After flagrantly removing her mask during all of the games after Christmas, I was forced to let her go with about ten games remaining in the schedule.

Koch left NMU the next semester and went to Canada to play in the Toronto area. She again made headlines throughout North America when she was barred by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association from playing on men's teams.

Today Karen is a legal secretary in Minneapolis. After her hockey days, she earned bachelors degree at Wayne State University and a Master's degree at the University of Dayton, both in the Liberal Arts. She holds a black belt in judo and is training in jujitsu. She also is writing and is illustrating her first children's book."

What I found most interesting is she thought of herself as just someone who wanted to play hockey, to simply be taken for her skills in a mans world. Isn't what we fought for as feminists in the 70's? I also found it curious that ultimately what may ended her career was her refusal to wear protective equipment, to this nurse very hard to understand. Someday I'd like to talk to her about this and other things.

Indiana Ice Melt under Chicago Steel

Friday night the Chicago Steel notched another one in the win column for their pre season warm ups. Both teams came to play but only one, the Steel to win last night at Bensonville's Edge Arena. The Ice dominated early but seemed to run out of legs and became a team of individuals. The Steel after taking 30 minutes to warm up caught their stride on the ice and looked well coached.

The venue at the Edge has been significantly upgraded since my first visit years ago. It now boasts an bar and sky boxes which can be rented for parties. Tickets on game day can be reserved for five dollars until 1:00 pm, parking is free, yes, even in this recession you can afford to take the family to to a Steel game. However one thing hasn't changed, one of the best things about seeing a game at the Edge is it's intimacy. Where ever you sit you are right on top of the ice, the sight lines are great. But the price is that the arena is often cold, so if you attend a game bring your favorite sweater or fleece even on a 80 degree day and you will be glad you did.

For those who have never seen the Steel they are members of the United States Hockey League or the American equivalent to the Canadian Major Junior Leagues. It is composed of young men under the age of twenty, has 14 teams divided into two divisions. All teams are based in the Midwest making for a “bus league” where games are only a few hours apart. The members of this league are funneled into the college system after “graduation” from the USHL.

Still it's pre season all these games are shake down cruses and are just a glimpse of what is to come for the season. If this is first snap shot of a team still finding it's legs things look good for the regular season. The kids in the USHL can skate, oh man can they hit and they even dig for the puck in corners. The regular season opens October 3rd against the USA Hockey team they will have all the bells and whistles for the fans out for opening night you can be sure. For a $7.00 ticket what's not to love?

Blackhawks Training Camp

Sadly my day job is keeping me home from camp this year however this site is giving fine coverage to the event.

Friday night the Chicago Steel will be playing Indiana Ice at the Edge in Bensonville. With luck it will be a chance to see Blackhawk prospect 17 year old Cab Morris in goal for for Indiana. He looked great at rookie camp against the big boys in July he should be really strutting his stuff before a home town crowd against the Steel. Game time is 7:30, be there or be square!

Belfast Giants Drop Home Opener To Sheffield 3:2 in Shoot Out!

The boys of Belfast worked HARD last night putting 30 shots at Sheffield nettie Kevin Rieter to Sheffield's 22 drilled at Belfast's Nathan Craze but it would not be enough for a win. Both teams would hit the net for goals during the first period, Sheffield taking advantage of George Awada's second penalty of the night to gain that all important first goal advantage. Then with moments to go in the period Pierre-Luc Faubert found the back of Sheffield's net to tie the score, new game.

Second period as described by the Belfast Giants was an "revolving door" of penalties. The league statics show a game total a balanced 18minutes for 9 infractions for Belfast and 20 minutes for 10 infractions for the Steelers. What will show every time is the ability to capitalize on the power play and a rock solid penalty kill. Teams can talk about power play but the plain fact is they have to also have a deadly penalty kill in their pocket too. The first month of the season is often a "shake down" period of assessment of team needs, this is obviously something shaking down for the Giants.

Third period action started fast and furious with Scott Basiuk putting the Steelers a head with a PP goal at 4:10 into the period . Not to be denied the home crowd went crazy when Tim Cook evened the score for Belfast at 8:14. The game would end in a tie in regulation and ultimately with a Sheffield victory in a shoot out.

Today at 13:00 hours Central(Chicago) time the Giants and Steelers will face off again, this time in Sheffield. There will be no webcast of the game, updates are available from the league or the Belfastgiants.com.

There is good news to share! As was reported earlier in the season Giants mascot Gordy was hospitalized with the H!N! virus. He has been released and is now recovering at home. Everyone at Powderhornhockey wishes him a full and speedy recovery, lots of chicken soup for you!

It was announced today the the Chitowndailynews.org has ceased publication. As the vast majority of my blog entries are posted under both Powderhornhockey and the Dailynews this changes nothing for us here.

The editorial team of Patrick Kissane, Kris Gray and Jane Rickard will soon be announcing the new home of " Sit Down and Shut Up" . Meanwhile, life and hockey goes on unchanged, at your "View From the Rail" our batteries are charged, the lights are on and we are good to go.

There is hockey to cover, games to shoot and Powderhornhockey will be there.

Belfast Giants Squish Hull Stingrays 3:2!

It was a good night for the boys of Belfast learning a lesson from last night scoring early and often. First goal came at 2:55 in the first frame,shortly after a kneeing penalty by Hull's Sylivan Couliter had expired. Belfast enforcer Sean McMorrow returned the favor with a 2:00 penalty for roughing in retaliation . That's the Sean we know and love from the American Hockey league, the new sheriff in town, keeping order. The rest of the game featured 15 shots on goal for Belfast and 21 for Hull, Belfast's Welsh nettie Nathan Craze was the starter for the night. Penalty minutes were not evenly divided between the teams with 8 minutes for the Giants and 20 for the Rays.

All in all not a bad weekend for the Giants. Both goalies got a start to work out the kinks away from the home crowd, by tweeted reports from Giants supporters attending the match the defence was reported as improved. The next game for the Giants is a home and home series against the Sheffield Steelers starting in Belfast on Saturday. Plenty of time for Coach Thornton to work on the power play and penalty kill.

Now if I could only find a way to get a plane ticket to Belfast...

Nottingham defeats Belfast in home opener 4-1

That pretty much says it all Nottingham dominated the entire game scoring within the first two minutes, the final score 4:1. There was no web cast for the game and the only transmission was via the "Cats Whiskers" of the Nottingham Panthers. Thank you to the kind folks in the Kingdom of the Giants chat room for the color commentary along the way.

Looking at the stats it brings three questions. First the goalie question, Stephen Murphy the Giants nettie turned away 31 shots. It begs the question whether he had proper defensive support? Not having had a visual of the game I can't comment beyond this is a coaching problem. A goalie should not be left all alone flapping in the breeze like laundry left out overnight. However this is something Coach Steve Thornton can best answer by proper coverage in today's game.

The second issue is the number of penalties, no team can win if they hand a man advantage to the opposition every shift change. Ugly goals may win games but stupid penalties loose them. While thinking of penalties Sean McMorrow gained his first time in the box for the season for "taking on the Panthers bench" according to the "Cats Whiskers" feed in the closing minutes of the game. McMorrow was given two minutes for roughing according to the feed, something has to be missing, that doesn't sound like a bench brawl by the time given.

Power play, needs work, the Giants were handed seven and did not capitalize on any of them.

Still it is early days and an away opener. These are the games where kinks are worked out. This game might have been kinkier than most but hockey unlike American football is a marathon not a sprint. Should the Giants finish the weekend with 2 points in their pocket and no injuries it will be well done. Tomorrow is another day and there will be yet another chance for the Giants they will be playing in Hull against the Stingrays 17:30 London time. That's 12:30 pm Central, grab a s sandwich and follow on Twitter.

Hockey Time in Belfast!

Ok, hockey fans in North America this is the day to get your errands done early for it is the season opener for the Belfast Giants today at 19:00 hours Belfast time or 14:00 hours Chicago time. (2:00 pm for those not on military time) . The Giants will be taking on the Nottingham Panthers in Nottingham.

There are new reasons for local interest in the Giants this season first is the Phillips brothers. David Phillips late of the Giants has inked a contract with the American Hockey League affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks the Rockford Icehogs. His brother Kevin Phillips has taken his place on the Belfast roster. Second Sean McMorrow long time AHL enforcer and member of last years Icehog line up is now a Giant. Obviously there is a bit of a Rockford and Belfast connection brewing, something this writer and photographer is very happy to see.

For those not lucky enough to have caught the flight last night at O'Hare the game will be Web Cast link at right just like last year. Unlike last season there is a nominal fee, to the hockey starved, McMorrow fans or just plain Giants fans it is well worth the price.

Notice something? 19 names, one of things that first caught my eye about this league was that like the old United Hockey League team rosters were small. Simply put these players skate their hearts out. With a small team and the big ice they play on conditioning and skating skill becomes a key factor in the game from the start of the season, the way it should be. It will be interesting to see how the addition of Sean McMorrow fits into a league where each player has to be flexible in his role. McMorrow when playing in the AHL filled the role of enforcer beautifully, but not as a goal scorer. I am looking forward to seeing how player coach Steve Thornton uses McMorrow's on ice skills to the Giant's advantage.

On a personal note, there are reports that beloved Giants mascot Gordie is in hospital possibly with H1N1, get well soon, Powderhornhockey's thoughts are with you.

Patrick Kane Has his first Day in Court.

Patrick and James Kane went on the record today entering a plea of not guilty before Buffalo Chief City Judge Thomas P. Amodeo.
to misdemeanor and violation charges tied to the alleged assault of Jan Radecki a Buffalo cab driver on August 10th.

In a short statement to reporters outside of the courtroom according to the Buffalo News Patrick Kane stated "Today was a tough day for us. You know, I just reiterated to the judge that I'm not guilty of any crime, and I'm confident in the legal process," . He said.
"Right now, much more can't be said," he added.
This would be the only glimpse of the proceedings for the media, as per the request of the defense attorneys the courtroom itself was closed to all press by Judge Amodeo. Defense attorneys also requested that both Mr. Kanes be absent for next Thursdays 10:30 court date, Judge Amodeo also granted this request.
So the saga continues of the twenty cent tip. The courtroom doors are firmly closed today however the doors are open in the court of public opinion. There is a week until the next gathering at City Court lots of time for a duck and cover drill or a side show. We can hope the wheels of justice run smoothly and blindly for the Kane boys. Then our minds can return to important things, like how many days until the first puck drop on home ice?

The Grand Jury is Baaacck!!!
It's misdemeanors and a violation each for Patrick Kane and his cousin James M Kane. According to the Buffalo News the the Erie County grand jury passed down bills of inditement for charges of third-degree assault and theft of services, both misdemeanors and harassment, a violation. No felony charges there for either Kane.
Both Patrick and James Kane will be in Buffalo City court tomorrow for arraignment. It would be typical of a first offender case such as this that the Kane's attorney Paul Cambria will be working for a plea arrangement with DA Frank Sedita III. We shall see what tomorrows court date shall bring, the saga of the Kane boys and the twenty cent tip is far from over, but the light is near the end of the tunnel.

Stevie Martins, Ages like a Fine Wine...

The time has come for my annual valentine to a favorite Wolf, Stevie Martins. Just why am I so fond of Martins? He is always there in on every play scrambling and scrapping. As a veteran he is constantly guiding the younger players on the ice and as one lucky enough to be standing at the glass you can the chatter between players. Steve Martin may be one of the oldest players on the ice but he is also one of the most respected. There has yet to be an announcement of the signing of his contract with the Wolves for this season, may the news come soon that # 26 will be taking the ice again in Chicago.

Patrick Kane Arrested in Buffalo.

Eight days ago 20 year old Patrick Kane and Blackhawk super star was arrested in Buffalo with a relative for fourth degree robbery, theft of services and criminal mischief. He stands accused of beating Jan Radecki, a cab driver in a rage over twenty cents. That's right twenty cents, one fifth of a dollar less than a quarter, you can't even make a phone call with twenty cents!

The absurdity of the entire situation has left me shaking my head, you see Buffalo is my home town and the location and some of the players involved are still familiar to me. All I want to do is ask this young man is,
“Patrick just what were you thinking?” .
What we do know outside of all the media buzz is that the case went to the Grand Jury last Thursday and has not returned a bill or no bill of inditement to date . Paul Cambria, Kane's attorney is launching a media campaign placing his client in the best light possible and stating the entire situation has been blown all out of proportion .

Mean while, last Friday the State of New York suspended Jan Radecki's drivers license .It was discovered he had been driving under a license he had gotten after his previous license had been revoked for failing to submit to a chemical test in April 1999 and for driving while intoxicated . Mr Radecki had simply reapplied under a different name and address took the written test for the learners permit . On September 10th 1999 he was issued a new New York State drivers license.

As the Grand Jury hears testimony behind closed doors and then deliberates if the evidence presented is enough to spend taxpayers time and money on a trial. It still brings my mind to one question, Patrick Kane, gifted 20 year old Blackhawk star, what were you thinking at 4 am last Monday morning?

K-Zoo Joins forces with Sharks and Flyers

The speculation is over, the Kalamazoo K-Wings in their newly minted East Coast Hockey League affiliation have joined forces with the San Jose Sharks and the Philadelphia Flyers. Practically this means they will be funneling players to and from Wrochester Sharks and the Phillphedphia Phantoms both of the American Hockey League.

The move of K-Zoo from the IHL to the ECHL is great news for IceHog and Wolves fans, as it means the Gwinette Gladiators the shared farm team for the Wolves and Hogs will be a four hour drive away a couple of times a season. To those who have never been to Kalamazoo is is a lovely old barn of a stadium and easy to find off of the interstate. Three years ago it was the site of one of the best games I have ever witnessed in my life, game 6 of the 2007 Colonial Cup Championships a knock down drag out fight between the then United Hockey League K-Wings and the Rockford IceHogs. The game had everything, broken glass, a hole in the net, and to top it off a goalie fight! I can't wait to go back, can you say road trip?

Wendell Young Named Chicago Wolves General Manager

As reported here earlier this week the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves have named Wendell Young as General Manager . Young seems a natural choice for the position having been with the club since its inception. First as its crown jewel in net, leading the team to Turner Cup championships as goalie in 1998 and 2000. Then as a coach for the Calder Cup in 2008. All this hardware with a pair of Memorial and Stanley Cup rings on his dresser at home. His succession to G M with these championships behind him mean far more than just the silver. To accomplish these he he has had to gain and understanding of the culture of winning necessary to bind a group of athletes together and make a team of them.

In an interview earlier today with Atlanta Thrashers Assistant Coach Todd Nelson he described Wendell Young to Powderhornhockey as having an “ Understanding what it takes to win.” More importantly he also said that “ Wendell has a way of bringing a team together” . The ability to scout a team that will gel is magic, the ability to keep it together during a season is alchemy. Championships take the greatest of management, Wolves owners and fans are accustomed to seeing banners raised and frequently. From the time he started out with the Cole Harbor Colts at 16 Wendell Young has been immersed in a culture of discipline, friendship and contacts. He should have a well filled Rolodex by now, perfect for prospect spotting. That's the work ahead of him, the alchemy of of building a team from a group of strangers, finding next years kids and keeping it all balanced. Young has been preparing for this since his first game with the Wolves in 1998, Kevin Chevyeldayof has cast a long shadow now is time for Young to make the job his own. Good luck and a winning season to him.

David Phillips On Defense, I like what I see...

It is hard to get a real grip on a player with as brief a look as I got of Davy Phillips last month. True, there were the web casts of the Giants games last winter where I was introduced to this young man holding his own in a in a 20 minute bench clearing brawl against arch rival Newcastle Vipers. Feel the love...Hey, they all shook hands at then end of the game! What caught my attention about Davey Phillips is simple he is a blueliner who stays at home. You don't need a Low Jack to find him on the ice.

This is what I like best about him though... just look at these photos on two days of camp there he is, he gets it, simply gets it. Nobody comes between you and the goalie! Pewee stuff but how many goals, games and series have been lost because some go getter got between a D-man and the goalie. It all comes down to the basics and it looks like Phillips has this one rock solid. Davy Phillips may have "player development" ahead of him in the next year in his transition from the Elites to the American Hockey League looking toward the National Hockey League but David has a good start.

Wendell Young To be named General Manager of Chicago Wolves

Sources have told the Powderhornhockey that Wendell Young will be named General Manager of the Chicago Wolves tomorrow.

The 46 year-old Halifax, Nova Scotia native has a storied hockey career; in 1981 as a member of the Kitchener Rangers he won Canada’s Memorial Cup. His first professional championship, the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup came with the Hershey Bears in 1988. Shortly after in 1991 and 1992 as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins he collected two National Hockey League Stanley Cup rings. In 1994 Young joined the fledgling Chicago Wolves. Young continued as their first line goalie until hanging up his skates after the 2001 season. In 1998 and again in 2000 Young became the only man in hockey history to win all four major North American hockey cups when he drank from the IHL’s Turner cup with his Wolves teammates.

According to Wolves website, after retirement Young moved north to Canada taking the position of goalie coach with the Calgary Flames until 2003. After his tenure in Calgary he returned to the Wolves as Assistant Coach and Executive Manager of Team Relations. His promotion to General Manager has been described by sources as “deserving.”

Young is a well know face to the fans, he was usually to be found at games behind the bench working with the goalies and the defensive players.

The time has come to welcome Jason Krog back with his summer Valentine. Last year when he signed with Manitoba the first thing I said to my contact in Winnipeg was how happy the team photographer was going to be. Jason Krog is one of the most photogenic players on the ice today. He looks great in a suit off the ice but put him on skates and sweat him up and he becomes Jim Morison on ice. Happy days are here again for Chicago based hockey photographers, Jason Krog, 2008 AHL Most Valuable Player and scoring machine is back on home ice!

Two more Wolves signings a Pohl and a Doell returns!

They have been busy boys and girls at the Wolves office this week. On Tuesday forward Jonny Pohl was signed by the team. Pohl should be a familiar face and name to Wolves fans. Despite spending last season dividing his time between the Swedish Elites and the Swiss league. Pohl comes to us after a long tenure with Toronto Marlies, including being named team Most Valuable Player of 2005. If memory serves correctly he is a “physical “ player and will be a factor near the net.

Kevin Doell is back! Yesterday team management announced that Doell had inked a team contract. This is good news indeed, for this guy has a heart three times his size and will add not only depth but to team chemistry. Kevin Doell came to the Wolves as a skinny kid looking for all the world like every bodies little brother. During his first season with Gwinnette he broke his jaw, twice. Hockey has not been easy for him, still he persevered and changed from that skinny kid to the 5'11” 190 lbs of solid player he is today. After the 08' championship season Doell signed with a Swedish team and spent a year in the land of the midnight sun. Their loss is our gain, welcome back Kevin, the fans missed you, it will be good to see #21 with your name on it again.

Lastly an old Wolf, Andy Delmore ,another member of the 08' Calder Cup Championship team signed a contract for the 09' season yesterday with the Detroit RedWings. Fair play and good luck to him!

Chicago Wolves may well have another local player in the line up when the season opens in October. Tuesday the Atlanta Thrashers reached terms with La Grange native, Tim Stapleton of the Toronto Maple Leafs . Two things I like about this addition to the stable, first the 79 points he got last year accompanied by the 26 penalty minutes, not bad. His two years with the Jokerit team of Helsinki, one of the finest in Finland.

Looks like a good move to these eyes.

A Belfast Giant Sheds Teal for Red, David Phillips Signs as an IceHog!

It was announced to day by Rockford IceHogs team management that defenseman David Phillips has been signed to a one year AHL contract with the club. It was first reported here that Phillips a Belfast Giant, would be attending the Chicago Blackhawks prospect camp earlier this month. Obviously the young Englishman impressed for he will be around to carry the flag for British hockey program in Rockford for the next season.

Meanwhile back in Belfast it was announced this last week that David's older brother, Kevin Phillips, would be taking his own place on the Belfast Giants blueline. Obviously Giants ownership sees what they like in the Phillips boys.

Cab Morris Blackhawk Eyes Are Upon Him!

This year work commitments kept me away from the Blackhawk Prospect Camp for it's first four days. My contact with the camp was purely as a photo editor of the thousands of images taken each day. It surprised me just how much I learned about each player simply by this form of observation . One of the players that impressed me most is Cab Morris the 17 year old goalie from Wilmette. Next season if you wish to see him in net he will be playing with the Indianapolis Ice who face the Chicago Steel in Bensonville. Blackhawk fans he is well worth a look.
One of the first things I noticed about Morris was the way other players gave him room on the ice, respect. This is coinage each player has to earn, epically difficult for an high school student going against tough college students and Canadian Major Junior veterans. Still the “the Kid” took no guff and gave as good as he got.
Cab Morris has a very unusual stance. Not so much of a butterfly but a powerful catchers squat, reminiscent of Thurman Munson. As we will have the chance to watch his development as a member of the Ice it will be easy to compare images of his stance and spot if coaching tinkers with his individual style for better or worse. This blog will not the the only set of eyes trained on young Morris you can bet Wade Flahrety Hawks goalie coach is keeping a close eye on his future prospect .

Summer time and the hockey news slows down to a trickle between camps and contracts. This weeks flutter is the resigning by Wolves parent club the Atlanta Thrashers free agents Scott Lehman and Grant Lewis, two weeks ago goalie Kari Lehtonen inked his contract. Don't expect to see anyone of those names back in Chicago unless the injury bug bites and a reconditioning assignment comes our way.

The Hawks goalie situation still continues to fascinate me, with Nikolai Khabibulin out of the picture, Cristobal Huet, Antti Niemi, and Corey Crawford move up the roster. Both Niemi and Crawford are looking to star in the big show only one will get the call for the opening Hawks game. The Hawks organization has an embarrassment of riches in their stable goalie wise, tough choices will need to be made before it is decided who will be wearing the colors of Chicago or Rockford .

It looks like Joel Kwiakowski will not be skating for either Chicago or Atlanta next season. As he was negotiating with the Thrashers it seems he forgot about a preexisting Russian contract. His Russian team owners have no intention of letting him out of his deal with the Russian leagues. Sorry Joel, it's back to Mother Russia for you!

Dancing at Blackhawk Prospect Camp

This week hopeful young men gathered in downtown Chicago answering the siren call of the Indian Head, the National Hockey Leagues Chief Black Hawk and all he represents. The object of a prospect camp is for players aged 17 and up to strut their stuff and impress the coaches of the host team. You can smell the hunger of these young men in the air, it makes for some pretty exciting hockey, for sure.

Just a few of these players will be offered a contract with either the NHL Blackhawks or with the AHL IceHogs. For most the camp is about assessment, information and next year. After five days of playing before the Blackhawks coaches the players then meet with Hawks staff for an “exit interview”. This is where they are told if they have made the team but also what they need to do to take their game to the next level. Invaluable information for a young athlete, looking to improve their personal best and and what that will bring to the table for future prospect camps.

As a first posting from camp here are some images of an encounter between Paul Phillips(#28) and Zach Cohen (# 47) these two players looked like they wanted to dance all day!

A friend of this blog, Mike Peck known as "Voice of the IceHogs" is in hospital recovering from a heart problem. Peck collapsed while interviewing a player at the United Center as part of Prospect Camp coverage. CPR was given on site and he was transported to Stroger Hospital where he is listed in Critical condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike and his family for a speedy recovery.

Atlanta Signs Two More, Kwiatkowski returns to the line up and Drew McIntyre comes aboard.

The goalie round up for Atlanta starts now, Ondrej Pavelec Chicago's Calder Cup winning goalie in 2008 just got some competition for his position as primary Wolves goalie,that is, if he wants it. This week Atlanta signed Drew McIntyre one of the most well traveled goalies in the AHL. McIntyre had his first professional start with the infamous Toledo Storm as part of the Redwings System. He then received the call up to the Grand Rapids Griffins and was a crowd favorite with the Manitoba Moose during his tenure there. Finally moving on to Milwaukee last season where he lead the Admirals to last months Calder Cup semi finals. This looks to be a good signing, talented goalie with a solid record. However, I have my nose in the air for a goalie trade in the near future, too much talent standing around for there not to be one in the wind.

The second signing brings the return of Joel Kwiatkowski or Kiwi as he is known among fans. Kwiatkowski spent the last year playing in the European Elites and it is good to have him back again playing on home ice again. Like Jason Krog who rejoined the Atlanta system last week he was part of the 08' Calder Cup Championship team. With John Anderson now the Atlanta coach he will first be given a solid look to see if he fits their needs. We will know if the happy reunion that seems to be developing in Atlanta will stay in Blueland or move north in October. Only John Anderson will be able to enlighten us on that subject.

I would like t thank my fellow posters at www.wolfkeeper.org for tipping me off to this story on a holiday.

This is good news indeed Jason Krog, linchpin of the 08'Calder Cup Championship season has been signed to a 2 year contract by the Atlanta Thrashers. The bad news for Wolves fans is that don't expect to see him in a Wolves uniform. With John Anderson firmly installed as head coach in Atlanta you can bet he is going to want to keep his American Hockey League MVP close and not send him north to to enrich the Chicago goal stats.
Take heart Wolves fans, any player or move that keeps the parent club winning,healthy and happy bodes well for the farm team. Fewer call ups and a more stable line up dramatically increase chances for a return to the winning Wolves of years past.

Put one tic in the optimistic column for this years Wolves season for moi!

It's Summertime, That means Player Valentines!

One of the advantages of following minor leagues is that players can be followed from age 16 or 17 until they make it to the big show with the National Hockey league. One such player that that has has been under the gaze of my camera lens has been 22 year old Chad Denny. He first came to my attention at Traverse City during the Red Wing Rookie Tournament along with another big guy Boris Valabik. Unlike Valibik who was of age and started immediately with the Wolves Denny was 18 and returned to his Major Junior team the Lewiston Maineiacs for another year of seasoning.

What sets this 6'3” Canadian apart from the heard is not his killer wrist shot it is his spirit. He plays with the heart of a kid on a back yard pond. After bouncing between the East Coast Hockey League and the American Hockey League for two years he still plays with his heart on his sleeve. One can only hope he will never loose it to the hard knocks of the game. This will be his last year of his rookie contract with Atlanta, so far he seems to have spent most of his time with the Gwinnette Gladiators rather than with the Wolves. When he has been in Chicago he has been left warming the bench rather than seeing regular ice time. It begs the question just what is Wolves Coach Granato thinking keeping such an aggressive player muzzled. Were I to bump into the coach tonight at his favorite haunt that is exactly one of the questions I would ask him.

Hockey in September and Scotland-Pipe in the Haggis!

For those of us desperately needing a hockey fix by September, grab your passports and cross the pond for Scotland's Gardiner Cup. In those long months since the end of the 08' season the Gardiner Cup offers an early and distinctive treat. The Edinburgh Capitals and the Belfast Giants will meet the Hamilton Bulldogs and Toronto Marlies in a tournament in Edinburgh on September 24th, 26th and 27th. Hockey in beautiful Edinburgh, kilts, haggis, bagpipes and single malt whiskey, what is not to love about that package?

The tournament is named for Charles “Chuck” Gardiner the first Scot named to the NHL Hall of Fame. It is expected that the series will be available by net feed and by audio link. It will be the first time an American Hockey League team has met head to head with a British Elite team. It looks to be an interesting match-up.

Although on opposite sides of the ocean, there is more contact between these leagues than one might think. Several familiar names have been part of the Belfast Giants roster over the years, starting with this year's addition of Sean McMorrow, Ed Courtenay, and former NHLer Theo Fleury. Next month a member of the current Giants roster, blueliner Davey Philips, will be attending the Chicago Blackhawks prospect camp.

Tickets for the Gardiner Cup games are available through the Edinburgh Capital's box office, http://www.edinburgh-capitals.com. The Belfast Giants website at www.kingdomofthegiants.com has a helpful line on out-of-town games and lodgings for those thinking of making the trip. A Belfast Giant Walking Amongst Us!

A couple of days ago this came across my desk courtesy of Craig Shillingday our contact in the British Elite League. It appears we shall have Davey Phillips, an upcoming British blueliner and a Belfast Giant walking amongst us at prospect camp next month. The word from Ireland is that if he stays in Chicago it will be blow to Belfast's hopes to take the Elite League this season. However, they are looking forward to seeing how the local favorite stacks up to North American talent.

Ivy King Cup Challenge

Saturday night while the city enjoyed it's first night of summer the UIC Pavilion rocked with Ivy King Cup championship featuring the Manic Attackers against the ladies in red and last years Ivy King Cup winners the Hell's Bells. It was a intense match as these old foes know each other well,however, at the end of the bout the Manic Attackers emerged the winners winning 137 to 115.

Thus ends the regular season for Chicago roller derby. But derby addicts take heart for the travel season is about to begin, The Windy City Rollers All Stars presently ranked second nationally in Women's Flat Track Derby Association will be meeting teams from other cities in the US. We are going to the playoffs, baby! Force Defeat Detroit Demolition 26:6.

"We are going to the playoffs, baby!" It was more of a primal scream than a acclimation , then she repeated the war cry and left the room. Yes, the Chicago Force are going to the Independent Womens Football League playoffs. Starting in two weeks after yesterdays commanding win over the Detroit Demolition 26:6. Chicago's ladies of the gridiron are, you could say very excited at the prospect of setting foot on the run to the big dance, the National Championship in Austin, Texas, July 25th.

Sometime tonight after weekend results are in data will be analyzed, a complicated formula will be calculated . Early tomorrow Force team owners will find out if they will have home field advantage for the first round game scheduled for June 27th. Or if they will have to pack their bags for a away game and fight their way to Texas the hard way.

Yesterdays game started out with uneven play in the first half . The Force just didn't seem to “click” there were poorly thrown balls, missed passes and incomplete blocks. The coaches must have inspired the team at half time as they were on the money in the second. Detroit went home loosing by 20 points and the Force to a party celebrating a playoff birth.

Talkn' Derby To You! Manic Attackers defeat Hells Bells 112:87, Fury dominate Double Crossers 93:87

So there we were, standing looking at a blue and white poster that simply read"Talk Derby to Me" Yeah, that's right up our line, skates,speed, contact bring it on! So we contacted the Windy City Rollers and found ourselves in track side "Suicide" seats with our guide, guardian angel and teacher of all things Roller Derby "Flash Hottie" last Saturday night. Yes, Hottie has a another name that she signs her checks with but in the derby world everyone has their roller derby name and that is how they wish to be known.

Hottie was assigned to us by the team to keep us safe and teach us about the intricacies of the game. First we were were guided to our seats they would be in the "suicide" section. So named because skaters come around the bend in the oval track at 25 miles per hour and can take out the very rows of seats we were sitting on. However, these seats afford the best view of the game, would we like to move to higher ground? Nothing doing, suicides it would be!

One of the things that struck me about the bout is that everyone connected to the organization seemed to be having a good time. The party atmosphere is infectious. The team support staff seemed genuinely concerned that we come to understand the game and feel like part of the party. The basics are pretty easy Pivots play defense, Blockers well, block. Jammers, these are the truly skilled skaters that weave through the pack lap the field and score. Jammers are the only players that can score. Should you forget a cheat sheet is handed to you at the door along with the nights list of skaters. No names that could be found on a birth certificate but monikers like Loco Channel, May R Daly, Ruth Enasia. As Flash Hottie explained to me taking a name expresses publicly your game face, it was a key part of the culture of the game.

The bout began and all images of 60's Sunday Morning Roller Derby quickly left my head, there were no gratuitous fights Saturday night. These ladies are athletes playing a contact sport they take very seriously. With three practices per week they have to be in great shape. Roller Derby is a contact sport with speed oh yes, enough to make any hockey or football fan take notice. Chicago should be noticing, June 20th the playoffs will be at the UIC Pavilion and bragging rights and the Ivy King Cup will be awarded. Last year the Rollers All Stars were runners up in the 2008 WFTDA Championship, this year they mean to change that. I for one wouldn't get in their way.

Covering hockey brings you lots of surprises, every game is a new challenge, every player a new subject. But come late spring and hockey season ends a short hiatus begins until the summer rookie camps begin. What to cover, what to keep the old juices flowing. This year Kissane and have two great opportunities both in women's professional sports, the first I will start the discussion on.

Earlier this weekend we had a look into womens professional tackle football. Yes Virgina, there is professional womens tackle football right here in Chicago. The Chicago Force not only are they dedicated athletes but they know how to show their fans a good time too. I'll be honest, what first drew me to the idea of covering the Force was the old feminist in me. As a product of the 70's I came from a high school where there was no I repeat no womens athletic program. Thanks to Title 9 women who came into high school and college after 1975 got a fair shake when it came to athletic funding. So I expected to find a group of powerful young women aged 20-30 in uniform when I hit the field. I couldn't have been more wrong. The very first woman I met was several years past her 30th birthday. I would come to find out the Force are composed of a group of mostly professional women aged 20's to 45 who love football and the challenge of staying in the physical condition to play it at the professional level. That means three practices a week and 6-7 days a week weight, flexibility and endurance training to have and maintain a body capable of playing the game safely. Because IWFL football ain't powder puff football, it's in your face tackle football. Just like the big boys play and just like the guys you get hurt if you have not earned a body capable of giving and receiving boldy blows and dealing with playing in hot or cold conditions.

Saturday this was proven true as several players of the Minnesota Vixen were taken off the field including one in an ambulance to the hospital. Many of the comments players made to me were that it was the difference in conditioning that made the difference in injuries and on the scoreboard that day. Standing on the field in 85 degree heat with 20 pounds of cameras and lenses around my neck I believed them. With the ending score of 53-0 it is a testament to the Force's fitness team.

I will let Patrick Kissane give the full on detailed account of the game, as usual I will let the images tell the story. These ladies take the game seriously and work hard to play hard. The organization is also working to make it a great fan experience also. Uber fan friendly, comfortable field, reasonably priced concessions and a staff that works to see that everyone has a good time. Next home game is June 13th 3:00 at North Park University. An easy piece of advice though, the seating is on the sunny side of the field so if it is a bright day wear a hat.

Has Hell Frozen Over? Wolves Fans Cheering for Milwaukee?

That quiet sound you you may be hearing tonight in Chicago from darkened basements is the sound of Wolves fans huddled around their computers secretly catching the Admirals game. Would you believe it Milwaukee has come back to force a game seven? Tonight we will find out if AHL hockey will continue in the area for another few weeks. For if the Milwaukee Admirals defeat the Houston Aeros tonight, the Manitoba Moose come charging into Milwaukee for the semifinals. That will mean more than a few sleeping Wolves fans will make the trip north to see the Moose go head to head against the Admirals.

BlackHawks about to begin another round. The possibility of seeing Jason Krog and Gui Desbiens on local ice again. If this isn't hockey heaven, please direct me!

Who cares about The AHL?

With all due respect to the growing bandwagon surrounding the BlackHawks, there still is minor league hockey interest in the city. Not everyone can afford United Center prices or has returned to the the BlackHawks growing throng of admirers no matter how well earned. Yes, there are still a few minor league fans who live for the drive to the big show and the season is still at full strength for those who follow the AHL. In fact my inbox has been filing with mail regarding the AHL update column all day.

Yes, the turn around of the BlackHawks is our primary focus at this time and we have been fortunate to wittiness Rocky Wirtz positively breathe life into a cadaver of a franchise. In the year since he took over the reins Rocky has taken a empty house and filled it to the brim, built a team to be proud of and a franchise that will deliver championships in the future. Even if Rocky Wirtz does not lift the cup up this year he has much reason to be proud.

I will be with you for every game the Hawks play this season tomorrow night and beyond. It's going to be a great ride no matter how long it lasts. But still I look forward to seeing how the AHL shakes out, updates to follow!

In that spirit, Milwaukee lost to Houston Thursday night, the series is now 3:1 Houston.Brunhilde is now on her southern tour and is doing a sound check in Houston's Toyota Center this morning, game 7:30 tonight. For Hawks fans Puck drop is tonight is a late one start the coffee game begins at 9:30. I look for a physical game, whoever makes the most mistakes loses. It's a good night for hockey!

Hawks play for all the marbles tonight, The AHL where do things stand?

Tonight the Chicago BlackHawks come out from the locker room needing to breathe fire and ready to win. No mistakes tonight, if they lose this one it will be tough to unseat the Nucks just one win away from the next round. Not many expected the baby faced Hawks to make it to the second round fewer still thought they would make it to the third. Just do it guys prove them all wrong if only for the fact it will feel darn good.

Meanwhile in the AHL, things have been moving right along in the playoff race. In the East mythical land where players and coaches sleep in their own beds each night. The Bridgeport Soundtigers and Philly Phantoms have fallen by the wayside and the Hershey Bears and WB/Scranton Penguins are locked in a grudge match. These teams truly do not like each other and it will prove to be a heart pounding series. Lucky the fans who will get to see this one, presently Hershey leads the series 2:1 next start tomorrow night.

The Atlantic Division now has narrowed down to the Providence P-Bruins and Wooster Sharks this series is tied at 1:1 each. These teams defeated The Hartford Wolfpack and Portland Pirates to make it this far. Their next meeting is tomorrow night in Providence.

In the two divisions of local interest the North and West, first the North. The Manitoba Moose look like the real deal this year. Not only have they defeated the Marlies in round one they defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins in round two. Grand Rapids fought a hard series against the Hamilton Bull Dogs in the first round then went down in four quick and deadly games in the second to the Moose. Yes indeed squirrel, Bullwinkle has a real attitude this season! The addition of Jason Krog and Gui Desbiens seems to of been the magic the Manitoba needed to take it to the next level. A friend from Winnipeg wrote me and asked"just what were the Wolves thinking" when they let Desbiens slip through there grasp. Well Mike, your guess is as good as mine, but I bet you are glad they did.

Mean while in the West Milwaukee seems to of stumbled. The series against Houston is now Houston 2, Milwaukee 1. The next meeting of these teams is tonight at 7:05 in Milwaukee. There are probably still good seats available, my guess is that it's going to be a great game. If you don't stop for dinner you just might make it by the middle of first period.

It's a great night for local hockey no matter who you follow, play nice you kids!

Series tied at 1:1 Can Vancouver win aganist the BlackHawks Fans?

Last night it seemed the Chicago had forgotten the basics, they were down 2 nothing at the end of the first period both goals scored on power plays. So much for keeping out of the box, boys. Sami Salo found his moment at 5:35 and Alexander Edler at 6:44 for Vancouver's first two goals. It is unknown what coach Joel Quenneville said to his team during the first period break perhaps it was what was vibrating off of our living room walls ...

"60 minutes of hockey, do not make a mistake, for at this level mistakes turn into power plays. Power plays become goals. Blackhawks, DO NOT leave Roberto Luongo alone in the crease, somebody has to stay on top of him. Meanwhile keep someone close to Nikolai Khabibulin." Something like that was screamed out the back door and into our alley last night during the first period break. Somehow the neighbors seemed to take it in their stride, living two miles from Wrigley Field somebody always seems to be screaming about some sports team. However,I digress!

Second period started and the Mighty Hawks took to to the ice. By the end of the period we were looking for the third leg of a hat trick from not one but two Hawks Patrick Sharp and Dave Bolland. Third period goals by Patrick Kane and Ben Eager brought Chicago's total to 6 goals to 3 for Vancouver. The young team from Chicago had pulled up their skate straps and pulled it off, the series is tied 1:1. They will return to the United Center on Tuesday with the knowledge that not only can they beat these Nucks they can beat them in their own house in front of their own fans. Just think of how well they will do in front of those committed to Chief BlackHawk!

Hawks Take Control, Lead Series 3:2 after winning game 5

It was Hawks all Chicago BlackHawks at the United Center last night the final score was Hawks 5 Calgary Flames 1. First period established quick domination of the game with three goals in 2 minutes 33 seconds, first 9:15 Brent Seabrook, second 10:49 Patrick Sharp and at 11:48 NHL Rookie of the Year nominee Kris Versteeg. A pace so fierce the in house announce had a difficult time keeping up with the names , just beautiful.

Second period brought the lone goal for Calgary at 2:45 by Dustin Boyd. Hawks answered with two more by Andrew Ladd 6:14. At 13:16 Flames coach Mike Keenan pulled veteran nettie Mikka Kipusoff and replaced him with Curtuis McElhinnery. A little over a minute later at 14:56 Cam Barker marked Hawk turf by finding the twine and scoring on the relief goalie. Ohhh some days it just doesn't pay to strap on the pads. At the end of the night McElhinnery did well turning away the majority of the 20 SOG Calgary faced.

Third period Hawks kept up the pressure and the Flames just hung on and stayed alive. The big excitement was a fight between Calgary Flame Adam Pardy and Hawk Ben Eager by the Flame's bench. They both were awarded 5 minute fighting majors, the fight did seem to release a bit of the on ice tension. However I'm willing to bet there is still enough left over for a feisty game 6.

The BlackHawks and Calgary Flames pack their gear and head north for game 6, to be played Monday night at the Saddle Dome in Calgary. A Calgary win the series returns to Chicago, a Hawks win the series ends and the planning starts to see what the next round will being. Bring on Game 6, how many hours is it until game time?

Hogs Bite the Dust, Where do we go from Here?

The West it's easy, Peoria and Houston are tied at 2:2 the winner of that series will go on to meet Milwaukee Probably in a week to a week and a half. Plenty of time for banged Admirals to heal, mend those sprains or on the contrary get nice and stale, that happens too.

As we look to the North, every bodies favorite road trip!
Semifinals:
Manitoba and Toronto are also tied 2:2 next game tomorrow night in Toronto.
Grand Rapids leads Hamilton 2:1, next game tonight in Grand Rapids.

Atlantic Division land of that amazing junk food the hot lobster roll....

Hartford Wolf Pack and Worchester also tied 2:2 next game, Thursday in Hartford.
Providence leads Portland 3 games to 0, tomorrow in Portland.

East Division:That mythical place where players all sleep in their own beds each nite all tucked in with a cup of tea...

Good news Bad news for the Hawks...

First the bad news for the Chicago Blackhawks, last night Calgary and their rabid crimson wearing home town fans carried the day and the series is now 2:1Hawks. Tomorrow will be tough current bar room intelligence is that the Hawks should come away form Calgary with one win and they will be alright. Loose two and the way to the cup is tougher, but they will be tougher on Chicago ice. Just win tomorrow night Hawks and get it over with. The formula is easy it can be remembered from your peewee days. 60 minutes of hockey, stay out of the penalty box, capitalize on the other guys mistakes and in the name of all that is sacred don't leave poor Khaabibulin all alone in the crease. While you are at it make sure someone keeps Kiprusoff company too.

Now for the good news, Patrick Kane appears to be over his case of the 24 hour "flu" and will be be in in the line up tomorrow night. Second,hopefully the networks will let us hear the unique rendition of the Canadian National Anthem as it is performed in Calgary.The soloist starts then raises the mike and the crowd takes over, we all are lifted in song and hear....
"With glowing hearts

Hawks Win 3-2, Hockey is Back in Downtown Chicago!

Last night there was singing and dancing in the streets of downtown. The Chicago BlackHawks who for the last decade have been the basement dwellers of the NHL won their second game in the playoffs. The BlackHawk faithful long starved for the heady playoff wine were ready for the puck to drop. Walking into the United Center the scene before us was pure excitement, fans dancing, waving the "rally towels" that were given to them at the door. A common theme was that although confident in their beloved Hawks many fans still were looking for reassurance that this all was really happening and not just some delicious hockey dream. The Hawks in the playoffs, who woudda thunk it two short years ago. Certainly, not this photog.

The game did not start well for Chicago, Jarome Iginala and Adrian Aucion both found the back on the net for Calgary leaving the crowd wondering if the mighty Bullin Wall was showing some kinks. Not to fear the young Chicago Captain Jonathan Toews scored 43 seconds into the 2nd period and the pace was set for the rest of the night. Patrick Sharp's goal followed and Jonathan Toews slipped a second puck passed Calgary's Mikka Kipperusoff and the score was 3:2 where it remained the rest of the game.

There are a couple of observations from this minor league fan about the Hawks, first it was wonderful to see so many old IceHogs on the ice. It felt like old home week looking through the lens. Second Goalie Nikoli Khabullin is often a lonely guy out there with out any defense to back him. The Hawks are not going to progress deep into the playoffs riding on the back of their goalie. Give the man some company in the crease. Lastly Jonathan Toews,last night he made a move that I just loved. After his first goal, Toews simply circled Kipperusoff twice maintaining eye contact, pure mind game and beautiful. The kids got game!

Game C and D in the series will take place in the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary on Monday and Wednesday.

Chicago Wolves Win last game of Season5:2 over IceHogs

A year ago when the last post of the Wolves season was made made it was full of exclamation points and happy chatter regarding the winning of the Calder Cup. This year although having won their last game the boys from Rosemont will be cleaning out their lockers on Monday and calling for tee times on Tuesday. Meanwhile their counterparts with every team within a hundred and fifty miles will be packing their gear and looking to see who will be their first playoff opponent.

In last nights win over the Rockford IceHogs the Wolves played the role of spoiler beautifully. With this loss the Hogs are no longer in control of their own destiny. They will find out who and where they will play next after today's game in Houston. Will it be in warm sunny Texas? Or will da Hogs face powerhouse Milwaukee having fallen into 4th place? This is what happens when you don't play like you mean it boys.

The game started out with discipline enough then got a bit out of hand when at 1:50 the first period Rockford enforcer and Ex-Wolf Sean McMorrow received a double minor (4:00) for "attempted head butting" and Mike Brennam 2:oo for interference. This set up a rocket of a Chad Denny Special assisted by Martins and Sterling at 3:39. By the 14:51 the score was 5:0, Referee Dan Banfield (44)was beginning to add up the PIMs on Rockford including a game misconduct on Kyle Beach for boarding which resulted in a facial injury to Alex brooks. In the end it would be 31 min/10 inf for Rockford and 13min/7inf for Chicago. The low penalty count possibly could be attributed to the "playoff style" of calling penalties by Referee Branfield, which kept this important game for Rockford flowing and let the guys play.

Both Rockford goals were scored by Akim Aliu a BlackHawks prospect who like the Wolves Danick Paquette is fresh up from the Major Juniors. Like Paquette he arrives with a killer check and reputation for a nasty temper. Unlike the Wolves prospect Aliu is over 19 yeas of age and will be in either wear a Rockford or a Blackhawks uniform this fall. It will be most interesting to see how accurate the years of observations and mixed scouting reports on this talented young man have been. No one doubts his ability to put the puck in the net or take an opposing player out of play, but can he remain cool when the ice gets hot?

As Kissane and I left the arena last night talking about where we might go for playoff games in the next weeks. We also talked about season ticket plans for next year. Things seem to of changed for many of the long term season ticket holders, bless our reps, they are still there for us. The ushers in our sections are people we depend on weekly to keep order. But something has changed. There is something different and altered to the point that most of the long term season ticket holders we talked to are going to have a long thought process over the summer as to downgrading their packages. It's not the loosing season, it's something else, times are tough we all are making hard choice as to how to spend our hard earned and disappearing dollars. The easy way would be to say on "Fan appreciation night" we just didn't feel appreciated. I'd go back a bit farther...

Two years ago I covered the Colonial Cup series between the then UHL Rockford IceHogs and the Kalamazoo K-Wings. After the series ended in Rockford the on ice celebration went on for over an hour. But it was very different than the one we observed at the Allstate last year after the Wolves won the Calder. The IceHogs constantly made an efforts to engage the crowd, the fans were as much of a part of the celebration as the team. Look at the photos the Hogs are facing the crowd the Wolves are facing each other and forming a circle closing the fans out. Management teams change, decisions are made to keep sports franchises alive during difficult times that often season ticket holders don't understand the logic of. However, as one who has a voice, I feel the need to express the murmurs of discontent. As one of the true faithful expressed it"we felt as if our hockey family left us". These are tough times, discretionary funds are drying up in family budgets, now may be the time for the front office to turn outward and listen. Sometimes all it takes is giving the impression that you are listening, give a damn and embrace the odd new idea. Now that may help make for a happier " fan appreciation night" that has nothing to do with a winning season.

But what do I know? I'm not an expert, just an observer, photog and I comment on what I see and record of the game I have loved and followed most of my life. In the end the pond never leaves your heart.

Wolves Win one for Pride, Slay Lake Erie Monsters 5:0

Last night those of us who ventured out to the Allstate to see a game that meant nothing statically were rewarded by decent hockey. Don Granato sent out a mix of kids and vets that simply played 60 minutes of hockey and with the exception of Jordah LaVallee stayed out of the penalty box. It begs two questions, why didn't he do this all year and is a taste of next year? I for one hope it is the latter, Pollianna here is going to focus on the positive , on the ice last night were two stand outs. Earlier this week Atlanta signed RW Danick Paquette still a bit wet behind the ears, fresh from the Lewiston Maineiacs the same Major Junior team that brought us Chad Denny. However due to his age unless he is judged ready for the Threashers Paquette will have to return to Liewston for next season and his 19th birthday. Paquette played like his hair was on fire, he hits like a train, finishes his checks and although not listed on the score sheet I can tell you he was in on the scrum for each one. The only negative in his background is a marked propensity for aggression. Under present coach Don Granato they might not be the best of mixes unless Paquette has learned to control his temper.

A second high note was the performance of Andrew Kozek, who has played a handful of games with the Wolves. Last night he did impress, with two goals and did his best for hat trick in the closing seconds. As Kosek was born in 1986 there are no age problems with this young man. If team management sees something they like hopefully he will be back.

The Wolves play for the last time this season on Saturday night facing rivals the Rockford IceHogs. The Hogs failed to clinch a playoff birth losing to the Quad City Flames last night 3:2. Saturday night it will be do or die for the boys for Rockford. As I look into my crystal ball I'd say it is going to be a "physical" game, more sensitive types might want to stay home and watch a DVD of " Slap Shot".

Ok, the time has come to introduce the smelly elephant in the room, the Chicago Wolves were beaten by the Milwaukee Admirals last night 3:2. Ending their mathematical chances at the playoffs the this season. Atlanta had chimed in earlier in the day calling goalie Ondrej Pavelec to Atlanta leaving Wolves with Brett Khran and Dan Turple. Now, that hurts, when the parent club takes it's crown jewel and run to play spoiler in the NHL since it's own playoff chances are over. So sad, too bad for the Wolves who started out well this season raising fans hopes with their new coach then struggling in December, flaming out in January then nose diving in February. Then calling it in for the rest of the season. A few stand out players did on a regular basis attempt to play with heart and stood out like sore thumbs. Chad Denny, Captain Jamie Rivers, Joey Crabb, Spencer Machacek gave and never stopped giving to their team, bravo to all of them! Steve Martin played well most nights but also fell into the the funk affecting the team on occasion.

Now that the math has been done the collective belly aching and predictable calling for Coach Granato's head has begun. Wolves fans are accustomed to playoffs yearly and a season that ends before the middle of May is practically unheard of for Wolves faithful. Well this year if those of us who are the usual residents of of the Allstate Arena wish to see playoff hockey we will have to travel to see it. Making the trek to the lovely Bradley center in Milwaukee, Rockford with it's world class hockey fans, or Peoria celebrating their first time in the playoffs since joining the AHL. It will be great hockey, enjoyable but not quite the same thrill as watching the home team win.

Whether or not there is a wholesale carnage in the Wolves locker room is a decision which will be made by persons with more experience and hockey smarts than I. However, Coach Granato does seem to have one policy that looks like it is producing a toxic residue. As many of us in the stands have noticed every time a a player has entered into a fight that has garnered penalty minutes that player is benched for several games afterward. This policy has hit enforcer Mike Hoffman especially hard, to penalize a player for enforcing the code just poisons the ice. If Granato wants to bench a player for stupid penalties he should start with Brett Sterling and his always ill timed hooking calls. Although I am in no way a supporter of gladiator style hockey the surgical style of a true enforcer is something I see the necessity of and respect in the North American game.

What I do know is that many of us are going to make serious decisions regarding season ticket packages on the basis of those front office decisions in the coming weeks and months . Every off season is an interesting time to study team personality and politics. This off season is going to be absolutely fascinating for those of us who watch the Wolves.

Ice Hogs Do Wolves a favor, Lose 4-1 to Milwaukee

Last night before a sold out crowd at the Metro center the Rockford Icehogs did themselves no favors, losing to division leading Milwaukee in great style. My blogging partner, Kris Gray at the Chitowndailynews.org described the loss "not being pretty".
With this loss Wolves playoff hopes are rejuvenated. As it was described to me by a Wolves fan and mistress of all things statistical in order for the Wolves to make the playoffs the Hogs need to loose all remaining games and Wolves need to win win them all. Why does the song "Stay'n Alive" keep running through my head this morning. Thanks Hogs.

On the snarky side last nights win by Milwaukee featured an unassisted goal being scored by Justin Taylor at 2:36, in the first period. Taylor was recently released by the Wolves and was picked up by the Admirals this week. Later today the Wolves will face Milwaukee at the Bradley center, after scoring last night Taylor will probably be out looking for more, sweet revenge.

Last night during the game an old friend Akim Aliu also showed his feisty side for the IceHogs. This young man fresh up from the Major Juniors was tapped to serve a 2 minute " bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct" at 17:13 in the third period. This evidently turned into a 10 minute "misconduct-abuse of officials " at 19:13 was it something he said? Not a good way to start out the AHL season Akim.

Whats that we see in the rear view mirror? It looks like things have changed on the local hockey scene. The Wolves perennial playoff contenders with last nights road loss to the Quad City Flames seem to be looking at their playoff chances quickly fading away.

Meanwhile back at the United Center the Blackhawks with last nights win over the Nashville Preditors have clinched their first playoff bid in a donkeys age. Things have changed, who woudda thunk a year ago with the Hawks still struggling and the Wolves driving their way to the Calder that this would be the picture in 12 months. One thing for certain hockey never lets a fan down for drama, we have a great playoff series before us both in the AHL and the NHL. With Milwaukee, Peoria and Rockford involved on the AHL side it might as well be local for minor league fans, those games will all be less than two hours away, sweet. Last week of March, with two weeks left in the regular hockey season and things look just as tight as they have for the last two months. The Milwaukee Admirals having taken the bit in their teeth early in the season have 99 points tonight and have clinched a playoff spot and home field advantage. Houston Aeros and the Peoria Rivermen are tied for 2nd place with 82 points and Rockford in 3rd with 78 Chicago 4th with 79. The Iowa Chops can't be counted out with 76. Right now the only thing for certain with a race this close there is a very good chance there will be a playoff game for hockey junkies to watch with in a comfortable driving distance of Chicago in early June. The final two weeks of the season will tell us the story. Will Peoria a team who has been an also ran in the AHL finally become the contender they were in the UHL? Rockford will they like last year peak during the playoffs and become a very serious combatant for whoever they face? Houston? Always the bridesmaid time for them to wear white? Milwaukee, they could take it all this year, but weird things happen in playoff runs, never count out our friend Serendipity.

On the local front the Wolves played two games this weekend splitting the outcome. Saturday winning against the Quad City Flames 3:2 in a shoot out.Ondrej Pavlec the Wolves's work horse of a goal tender turned away 29, ( 2/8 SO) SOG while QC's Leland Irving turned away 29 (3/8 SOG). Referee Fredric L'Ecuyer(#49) called a minimum of penalties remarkable for the amount of lumber that seemed to be observed to be flying around during the game. However, the game continued at a playoff pace and the boys played on. It seems that like the Wolves have noticed the calender and if they wish to play into late April extra effort is needed now.

Tonight the Milwaukee Admiral's came to town and the Wolves did not roll over and show them their collective bellies. Although the Wolves lost to the Admirlas 5:2 they were in the fight until the end. The most outstanding feature of the game was Milwaukee's Mike Santorielli's hat trick. Somehow it always disappoints me when no hats are thrown for an out of town player, still it is always a treat to see a hat trick of any kind . Referee Ian Croft called a total of of 18 mim for 9 infractions for Milwaukee and 16 minutes for 8 infractions for Chicago. He was backed by linesmen Bryan Pancinh and Roger Behining.

Linesman Al Steinsland who frequently covers Wolves games is reported to still be out with an undisclosed injury he suffered in Fridays game in Rockford. His cool head, confidence and poise on the ice will be missed until his return.

Another surprise that was on hand at the AllState was a display of Wolves Skating Coach Kenny McCudden's large collection of antique skates, equipment, books and blades . As a child who loved the story Hans Brinker I was enthralled looking at the collection . Of course, there are images to share......

Oh Canada! Hamilton Wins 3:2 in Shoot Out!

Chicago Wolves played markedly improved hockey against the Hamilton Bulldogs and were rewarded for their efforts by taking it to a shoot out and pocketing a point for the weekend. Giving the Wolves 74 points or tying them for 4th place with Rockford and 2 points out of second. Rockford has three more games to play on the schedule than the Wolves against the Aeros, Peoria, Iowa and San Antonio all teams which are contenders or would love to play spoiler. The Wolves have a comparably easier schedule playing Milwaukee 3 times Peoria,QC and closing against Rockford. Using the schedule as a crystal ball the Wolves are looking to the rest of the division to bloody themselves in a chicken fight over 2-4th . Meanwhile Milwaukee sits pretty and secure only to think about who they will meet in the first round. The Wolves meanwhile need to stick to the basics, stay out of the penalty box, 60 minutes of hockey, play hard or it will be tee times for Chicago on April 12th.

It's always a good time when the Bulldogs come to town. Several years ago their booster club followed the team on a weekend swing and a bus load of fans filled a section of the Allstate. Including several great road ambassadors like the "Cookie Lady" who baked hundreds of graham cracker dog biscuit cookies for the Chicago fans. I got to meet her in Chicago and in Hamilton of the Calder Cup Semi Finals two years ago. The Hamilton boosters are a great group of hockey first fans, they were missed last night and not just for the great cookies. Maybe next year when the economy is a bit better and we all are traveling more.

Hamilton drew first blood with a goal by Mike Glumac at 4:30 in the first. Chicago answered with a PP goal by Chad Denny at 18:25 a boomer that put the crowd on it's feet,he was assisted by Jamie Rivers and Spencer Machacek. Brett Skinner put Chicago ahead at 2:35 in the third, assists by Clay Wilson and Joe Motzko and at 3:44 Hamilton's Yannick Webber would tie the game and overtime became a reality. Hamilton's nettie Marc Denis did a great job between the pipes turning away 38 SOG. During the SO he did some amazing work, none more than his reading of Clay Wilson stopping that goal attempt cold. So many SO are simple skill competitions last night's was cut above thanks to Denis and Wilson they were both totally focused in that moment.

Wolves Gored by Manitoba Moose 6:3

It was a game that started out with the of roar three goals in three minutes. Two for Chicago's Spencer Machachek at 1:44 and 3:33, Manitoba got into the action with Mark Cullen striking first only .33 seconds out of the gate. The crowd smelled excitement, hard hitting and dare I say it a hat trick? Well, there was hard hitting a plenty, but Chicago just seemed to run out of legs mid way in the second period against the Moose. For a game that started with such promise it ended in a whimper of a lopsided score.

There were a couple of bright spots during the pre-game warm ups I had a chance to watch Moose Assistant Captain skate. Not only does Nolan Baumgartner have a great presence on the ice he managed to pass a puck to every kid in the mid section with a smile and a wink. Nice work he made several kids nights by his actions, that's another example of leadership on ice all be it a softer one.

Chad Denny got out for a few shifts when he hit the ice for his first he introduced himself to Manitoba in his typical manor with two resounding hits. The kid plays like he is fighting for a roster spot, although Denny does not appear on the "Clear Day Roster" for the playoffs he can play in the event of an injury to a player on the clear day. Since it is likely that an injury is possible, it seems a shame a check and a shot like Denny's should be black aced. Since people with more hockey smarts than I make these roster decisions can they explain it to me? It seems there is so much talent warming the bench like this every year and that's this photog's rant on the subject.

At the United Center it was all new Trier, Women's and Men's the Women defeated Loyola Academy 4:0 and the men 3:2, it was a tough night to be a Loyola student.

This was a high school game full of passion and energy, not a place for wordy analysis but a time for lots of photos if there was one. So let the good times roll these are the good times!

Chicago Beats Milwaukee Admirals 5-4 in Shoot Out!

Leaving the game last night I had already had this entry written in my head, little did I know that when arriving home a computer glitch would cause the photos that would be needed to be lost and along with it most of the power of the argument. Oh well, it is one of the prerogatives of the blogger to be blatantly biased on this bright Sunday morning I am going to embrace a bit of that purgative.

The job of the linesmen and the referees are difficult the amount of physical training necessary for the position is almost equal to that of the players. Then there is the confidence and the poise necessary to know the rules, understand the application and the gray areas to know when to let something slide, swallow the whistle and when to step in. There is a season ticket holder who sits by us, Kieth, who is a retired linesman. Talking to him at games has increased my understanding and respect for these watchers and shepards of the game. However, I also have a lowered tolerance for shall we say the referees that have been with the AHL, a development league for players and referees for two or more years and just don't seem keep up with the learning curve. Mores the pity when lack of control of the tone of the game results in players injuries. Injuries happen at any time but seem to happen with more frequency when players either seem to sense a loss of control or lack of confidence in the referee.

Last night the Chicago Wolves hosted the Milwaukee Admirals, historically these teams have always had physical encounters. Historically even their fans have had physical encounters, in short it's an exciting atmosphere at most Wolves/Admirals games. Last night was no exception , first period started out with a bang Riley Holsapfel scoring first for Chicago at 1:33. Mike Santoreli answered for Milwaukee at 2:18. The first penalties were awarded to Milwaukee's Cal O'Riley, and Kelsey Wilson involving an incident where Wilson stood over Chicago's Scott Lehman as he lay prone on the ice and as he attempted to rise Willson struck him across the shoulders with his stick three times. Referee Terry Kohraski awarded Willson 2 minutes for roughing and 2 for cross checking. Cal O'Riley 2 for unsportsmanlike conduct for adding his opinion on the matter. It is possible the treatment of this incident and the light penalty could of contributed to the general roughness of the game? That is this simple photographers musing.

The following minutes of the game were no doubt exciting, both teams pushed each other to the limit and I have some stunning images to show it. Stevie Martins Chicago's #26 played like his hair was on fire and showed us just why so many fans hope he plays as long as he wants in a Wolves uniform. SOG Drew McIntire for Milwaukee faced 31 for 27 saves and Ondrej Pavlec for Chicago 34 for 30 saves. In total for the night Penalties were evenly handed out, Milwaukee 24 minutes for 12 infractions and Chicago 29 minutes for 9 infractions. However neither team acted like angels on skates, linesmen Al Stensland and Brian Panchic did a great job separating and escorting players to opposite corners.

Columbus BlueJackets Goalie Wade Dubielewicz Knotches First NHL Win in 5-3 Victory.

Wade Dubielewicz the Columbus BlueJackets up defended his teams goal all the way to victory tonight at the United Center and in doing so earned his first NHL victory. To take the winning puck home Dubielewicz had to face 30 SOG of which he made 27 saves. Well done for his first start since February 6th, as the NHL's fast pace does not allow for the shaking out of rust from tail feathers.

Chicago goaltender Cristobal Huet faced 22 SOG for 17 saves. He was not appearing to have his best night of the year on the ice. His partner in goal Nikolai Khabibulin has returned from IR after aggravating an old groin injury and is expected to start on Sunday against the NY Islanders. He did suit up tonight for the game if needed however was not iced .

As regular readers of the blog may have guessed it was a night of NHL action for the usual minor league junkies. I have to admit it we have yet to find "our seats" in the United Center it is a big, beautiful hockey cathedral. Finding our personal sight line at at NHL prices is a daunting task. However I think the search is going to be one we will in the end we will enjoy. It was gratifying to see so many players that we have been watching develop from rookie camp and the IceHogs. Every single one of them looked great.

Last night as I was assembling the camera a group of old fans sitting behind us greeted their guests who had not been to a Hawks game in some time. The first words to them were"Isn't it great to see this place full again?" Then the playoff banter began behind us, it kept up for two hours. Ok Rocky Wirtz, well done, in a little over a year you have come a very long way. The town is buzzing about the teams playoff chances, Hawks wear is again visible on the streets and the house is filling. Frankly, I'm impressed, I was hopeful, but I had doubts that you could pull it off. However you put good team together and made some great decisions, including putting games on TV. With the Hawks coming alive again after their long sleep and the vibrant AHL rivalry between the Rockford IceHogs and the Chicago Wolves. Yes, it looks like Chicago is becoming a hockey town again.

Spoiler Alert! Iowa Chops take 2 points, Beat Chicago 2:1

Last night at the Allstate in a close hard fought game the Iowa Chops defeated the Chicago Wolves 2:1 making the role of spoiler far more likely for the newly christened Chops. As of last nights games the standings are Milwaukee still running away with first place, 89 points, Houston with 73, Hogs 70, Chicago 69 and the Rivermen in fourth with 68. All these teams have crowded schedules this weekend, come Monday morning the picture could look quite different for one or more of these organizations.

The game it's self was fast paced with referee Terry Koharasky calling a minimum of penalties for each side. Several times during the night both goalies were joined in the net by several players of each uniform yet only once was goalie interference called. Iowa goals were scored at 16:23 By Brendan Michaelson, and at 10:44 in the third by Ryan Dingle with an assist by ex wolf Chad Pinchaud. The sole Wolves goal notched during the second period was scored by Riley Holzapfel , Alex Brooks and Joe Moztko were credited with assists and a pretty thing it was too. Chops nettie David LeNeveau never had a chance to stop that bullet.

In the revolving door Chad Denny and Tomas Popsil has been riding the Georgia shuttle in the last week with both listed as healthy scratches last night. Brett Sterling is back and skating well after being out with a reported injured hand and Stevie Martins is also being iced. Welcome back guys.

Mississippi Sea Wolves- $2.00 tickets, a reason to smile!

This red head will be the first to admit it there has been allot of negativity around here. We have been up to our collective whoo haas in nay saying in this year of transition in Chicago. So many friends are out of work, everyone is cutting back on spending and this horrid Chicago winter just doesn't seem to be ending. It has caused more than a bit of disruption in my usual sunny character. Then a comrade in arms sent us notice via the web of a wee ray of hockey sunshine from the south.

It seems the owners of the Mississippi Sea Wolves, a team who's arena was drowned in Hurricane Katrina has decided to give it's fans a reason to come out and smell the ice tonight and tomorrow tickets are $2.00, yes two bucks. Now that's what I call a stimulus package. After hearing the basics I had to call down to the team and find out if it was all true. I was connected quickly to Leif Skodnik a fellow exile from Buffalo NY who immediately told me of the glories of watching hockey and then playing golf in the same day .Ok Leif, rub it in, it's been a long winter up here. The Sea Wolves in their newly refurbished arena will be hosting the Carolina Stingrays for two games this week as part of the festivities leading up to fan appreciation night and last home game of the season. It is gratifying to see team ownership inviting families in rather than wringing their hands at empty houses in the recession . Why not fill seats at at $2.00? Who knows fans brought in tonight might be the next season ticket holders as soon as this recession lets up and jobs are more abundant. For now it's nice to see team owners just thinking of the fans for once.

Rivermen Hit Wolves with Ramming Speed

Last night at the Allstate the Chicago Wolves came out and challenged the Peoria Rivermen to March hockey. Both teams came out fighting with early goals Peoia with Justin Fletchers at 9:9 in the fist answered by Brett Sterling's at 18:32 followed by Clay Wilson's to close the first period at 19:05. The home team went into the locker Room confident, perhaps too confident. For the Rivermen caught the Wolves at 10:23 in the third during a PP caused by a costly Scot Lehman tripping penalty. The nail was put in the coffin moments later at 13:38 with a Nicholas Dranoovic bullet that ended the Wolves night early.

One of the most crowd pleasing elements of the game was the constant agitation between Riverman Yan Stasny the Wolves bench, Ondrej Pavlec and Artus Kulda . It has been a long time since a true agitator has been in house and despite him being in royal blue it was fun to watch at times. But then again for better or worse this blogger still misses Karl Stewart and his antics. The action stated early with a slash that quickly turned into a brawl then blossomed into a chippy two periods of elbows and yippy yap.These teams meet again on April Fools day in Peoria, considering that Peoria is one point behind us this morning it might be worth the the trip to see the fun!

Chicago Wolves Quench Quad City Flames Win 2:1

Last night at the Allstate the Wolves did it again, won simply playing like a team for 60 minutes of tough hokcey and playing like they gave a damn. They are now firmly tied for 2nd place in the West with rivals Rockford Icehogs and ahead of the Houston Areos with 2 points while the Iowa Chops are fading with 63. Keep this up and this is a team that will not only go to the playoffs but make it past the first round.

In goal for the Flames was Leland Irving turning away 32 SOH while Chicago started Ondrej Pavement who turned away 39 SO. Refree Ian Croft enerously gave Chicago 27 minurtes of penalties while QC made do with 17 minutes for 9 infractions.

Due the first period Brett Palin suffered a possible left shoulder injury after he was checked by Chicago's Riley Hosenfel. He was assisted off the ice by QC staff and did not return to the ice for the remainder of the game.

Chicago Wolves throw BBQ, defeat Moose 2:1

Last night at the Allstate arena the Wolves played playoff hockey, tight, powerful playoff hockey and a beautiful thing it was to see. If the team keeps this up they will not only make the playoffs but avoid meeting Milwaukee in the first round. A very tasty prospect indeed for the Wolves.

The game featured high SOG totals Manitoba's goalie Curtis Sanford faced 29 SOG turning away 27, while Ondrej fPavlec faced a challenging 46, only letting a single shot in. Pavlec is a tough nettie, he has been the primary stater for the Wolves since his return from injury. It is worrisome to many his frequent use. But he seems to be the hot hand and with a two home game winning streak and four days rest until Fridays Iowa game he might be considered for the road start also.

Milwaukee Looks good, Damn good....

First place Milwaukee came to the Allstate Arena last night to play hard against the Chicago Wolves,play hard they did. The home team did well and had a great team effort to keep the score to a 1:0 It bodes well for the next meeting of these old rivals on March 14th.

Presently in the west it lines up like this:
Milwaukee 76 points
Rockford 64 points
Houston 63 points
Chicago 61 points

Obviously a bad weekend or a couple of injuries, return of players from injured reserve could change the order below first. The key for the playoffs, a mere 7 weeks away is fourth. That unenviable position will probably be playing Milwaukee and and see quick elimination. Second and third just need to make it to the playoffs but fourth, they will have to advance the hard way through the team play of the Admirals and the one, two punch of Mark Dekanick and Drew McIntire in goal.

What Chad Denny Did on His Day Off!

Today a group of children on the north side at the American Indian Center got to hear Chicago Wolf Chad Denny share with them a common heritage ,that of being of a Native North American . Chad Denny current player of the Wolves came into the city not only to sign autographs, eat lunch with a group kids on their day off from school. But also to share time and a common culture despite the difference in urban and rural, basketball and hockey, Chicago and Mi'Kmaq of Eskasoni First Nation of Nova Socita.
The Chicago school children asked many questions about life in the American Hockey League and what it takes to become a professional hockey player. “Hard work, it doesn't come over night” said Denny, hard work indeed he then told about skating coaches, long practices and studying the game.

The American Indian Center is located at 1630 West Wilson Ave , between Ravenswood and Ashland, in the site of an old Masonic Temple. It has lofty spaces, lovely light and plenty of space to accommodate the dreams of Special Events Coordinator Cyndee Fox-Starr. Who proudly told me Chicago is the center of the third largest urban Native American population in the country. We also have the only urban cultural center in the country, all of this makes for frequent and rich calendar of events. Members also told me of a theatre of the third floor which they also hoped would someday open producing works produced by members of the community and their children. The sign on the front door tells the opener to pull gently but firmly. Somehow it seems to fit this place, a strong heritage gently but firmly moving into the future. Krazy Karl Stewart Returns to the AllState! Rochester Takes 2 points from Wolves wins 4:3

I've written briefly before about Karl Stewart, the Wolves agitator of the past par excellence but there was more to him than that. Karl had a quality on the ice that I value as much as skill and sportsmanship, joy, yes, joy. Karl played with the heart of a kid at 2:20 listening for the school bell and running home to strap them on a hit the pond. When everything is a possibility and life is a frozen pond until dark, when dinner and homework beckon. When Karl Stewart skated he made those of us who were lucky enough to have had such a childhood feel it again, when he scored a goal we were back on the pond with him. This was the Krazy Karl I hope to see last night on the ice.

Stewart was with the Wolves for three years, some of my favorite Karl moments were his break-a-aways, he could go from one end of the ice to another before the opposition knew what hit them. I always suspected he scared the jingle bells out of most goalies at those moments. Sometimes after scoring a goal he would grab the goalies water bottle and take a nice long drink, just to let the guy know he was there. That usually got him a penalty and John Anderson's ire,Stewie didn't do that often but when he did the crowd loved it. If you watched his mouth it was constantly in motion, yipping and yapping especially as he skated by the bench. He was as someone put it a total agitator and we loved him for it, he was our very own Krazy Karl.

I had a couple of chances to talk to him personally ,Stewart once told me he played with "his heart on his sleeve". That was as much a asset as a problem to the team. Krazy Karl was not so much a loose canon but a pistol at times, no question his often ill timed penalties hurt the team. I wondered what might of had changed over the years with the spent in the NHL would he still be the same player gripping our hearts as he took the ice?

When the announcer called his name there were cheers, knowing the layout of the Allstate he had to of heard them. When he hit the ice he was still there our Karl Stewart. Probably not crazy after all these years but still, the heart was there. In his stride, the smile and a few of his moves and a though he left Ondrej Pavlelec's water bottle alone after he scored his goal he did take a long loving look at it.

Believe it or not there was other action on the ice last night. The final score was 4:3, Amerks the last place team in the AHL showed that they are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future. In the last year Rochester has had more than a few blows. The Amerks have changed coaches, almost lost their building, changed affiliations mid year last year and had most of their stars leave for greener pastures. The team that was on the ice worked as a team and the second goalie, Mike Brodeur, well he was a pretty sight to see with that rare goalie "wall" glow. After pulling Tyler Plante at the end of the first Mike Brodeur put in a performance that should make him a starter. It simply was poetry, many will remember Brodeur from his third position with Rockford last year, judging by last night he deserves to move up the roster.

Aeros Shoot down Wolves 6:3

Last night the Houston Aeros did it again, or shall I say the Wolves did it again. Lost to the Houston Aeros and dug themselves deeper into the standings. Much like a novice driver facing his first snow storm, spinning wheels with a bad PP and a poor PK. Guys, guys get a grip, vets show some passion and defense please stop making Ondrej Pavlec the loneliest man in town. Defence is a three man line, two blue liners and a goalie, please don't make me repeat my self a third time. Pavelec may be a touch slow side to side since his injury but being hung out to dry is costing the Wolves points they can't afford to loose.

On the positive side, the kids look good and are playing with fire, Joey Crabb is probably making Atlanta wonder why they sent him down to Chicago. Four points on Saturday, one last night and he showed no mercy to Kurtis Foster skating for Houston on a conditioning assignment from the Minnesota Wild. Crabb landed the hardest hit of the night on the ex-Wolf, considering Foster is easily a foot taller than Crabb he probably was impressed as he picked himself off of the ice. Welcome home Kurtis, you have been missed Big Man. Chad Denny, the kid is finishing his checks consistently and taking the opposition out of play. Mike Hamilton, Spencer Machacek and Rylan Kaip all are looking good too. There is enough here to still see the glass half full Candide, but March approaches and the playoff run in earnest. Milwaukee is running away and the middle is getting tighter. No room for mistakes or slumps now, there will be plenty of time to think about those on the golf course in May.

Time to get serious boys.

Peoria Rivermen go down for the first time at the Allstate

Last night the Peoria Rivermen lost to the Chicago Wolves for the first time this season 5:1. Most notably Joey Crabb recently returning from assignment in Atlanta scored a hat trick plus an assist for good measure. Not bad for a guy adjusting to the temperature change from sunny Atlanta.

Philly Phantom Garrett Koltz suffers Seizure After Fight.

Last Friday night things were rocking and rolling in Philadelphia, the Manchester Monarchs were in town and the opening face off was lining up. In a heart beat the mood of the arena would change. Seconds after the puck drop two players Monarchs RW Kevin Westgarth at 6'5” and 247 lbs with 116 PIMs for the season would challenge Philly's Garrett Koltz at 6'5” and 235 lb with 54 PIMs to his record. Both instantly dropped the gloves, removed their helmets and started the ritual, a hockey “dance”. Moving to the boards near the benches and the punches started to fly. Both Westgarth and Koltz landed powerful blows, by my count three each connecting with the others head. Koltz then hits the ice, in an obvious seizure, his legs jerking in a non purposeful manor. The trainers arrive first, then docs, the seizure appears to last under a minute by the video tape and Westgarth now several shades paler looks on from the penalty box.

Since his removal from the ice by stretcher Garnett Koltz was released from the hospital on Saturday after observation and closure of a facial laceration with stitches. He will face evaluation by team physicians on Monday as to his fitness to play after the All Star break.

In the weeks since Don Sanderson's death the discussion on hockey boards and blogs has flared and sputtered, it probably will again. The fact is the most hockey fans like their fights, but can we continue to look ourselves in the mirror while we pay to see these injuries occur? Three important points must be made here. The first specific to Koltz's injury, his head did not hit the ice or boards, his seizure was most likely caused by a blow to the head by a fist. Second both men removed their helmets voluntary as customary before a hockey fight, they were going to “go”. Last these are adults who know they are in dangerous business and there for assume many risks.

Hockey is an old sport, there was a time when goalies wore no masks, however a curve to sticks and wicked puck speed changed that. Remember the days of flowing locks and no helmets? Hockey has proven it can study, assess and change when proven safety issues exist. Now is the time for the Players Association to call in the neurologists, trainers and statisticians and figure out the odds of who is injured and what can be done to prevent them. To this nurses eyes for skill players a functioning chin strap is the first step. For example, last week Jack Skille of the Rockford Icehogs suffered a concussion in a game against the Chicago Wolves Here are the images of the injury.

Please note the helmet with it's chinstrap in the usual “two fingers between strap and chin” position appears to do little to protect his head as he falls against the boards. Would Skille have been on the ice last night against Milwaukee if his chin strap had been in the snugger position advocated by the passionate orthopedist I met in Traverse City years ago? I don't know, right now no one does and that is the problem. The NHL and Players Association need to step up and go where ever the trail may lead them. The NFL is looking into Post Concussion Syndrome, equipment and play seriously, it is time for hockey to look into it's mirror too.

Western standings, Milwaukee leading a Nantucket sleigh ride

As we told our friends in Rockford during their first year in the AHL standings mean nothing, points mean everything. It could not be more true this year. Milwaukee is running away with the division with 60 points it will take a melt down of major proportions to catch them. This is hockey and 10 point leads in January can be gone in March. But the fact about the playoffs is that once you get in all bets are off and you fight your way to the cup. Again, standings only mean who plays in the first round after that it is up to each team to decide their destiny. At this point in the season second and fifth place are separated by 4 points, two wins. TWO WINS,TWO LOSSES most years the West is the tightest division in the AHL this year it has taken tight to a new level.

As the second half of the season is upon us let the games begin, this is going to be a Nantucket sleigh ride of a playoff run and it is going to be some serious fun. A word of caution though, to the teams with San An heavy on their schedule, with 1089 penalty minutes already and with only 39 points, they are the longest shot for the playoffs, this Texas team could be eager to play spoiler as April's tee times become a reality.

Wolves break Annual Mid Winter Depression with 3 game Winning Streak!

Every year it seems to be the same process for the Chicago Wolves, hot start, then as the snow starts to fall thoughts turn to holiday events the team decides to call it in. Everything seems to happen to the Wolves, this year it has been epically bad. As my Father, a L'l Abner fan would say “They are having a Joe Btfsplk day”. If you remember Joe was Abner's good friend who was such a jinx he traveled around with his own personal rain cloud over his head. Yes, the Wolves have had their own rain cloud for the last month and a half. Injuries, a locker room rumored to be full of the flu, malaise yes we all could spot that ugly mist over the bench. There was the night the lights went out in the arena, there were gremlins every where, Skates even had two hot paw nights when the fireworks in one of his paws did not go off. Yes, the Wolves seemed deep in their winter of their discontent until the Marlies cam to town last Wednesday and a ugly shoot win came their way.

Friday the team played their socks off and won in the toughest of houses against the Rockford IceHogs a team that will beat you every way possible if you give them a chance. Then beat you again the next time with what they learned the night before. Last night the Wolves pulled up their socks with their new found confidence and started paying as a team again. No, they are not the team of last year, loaded with vets and stars but it looks like this team just might be ready to be themselves, however far that might take them. I feel good about that prospect.

Oh yes, the Wolves won last night against the Quad City Flames 3:4, playing like a team. Not like Calder Cup Champions but like a team, the rest will come.

Wolves win first of the season in Rockford 3:2

Last night the Wolves packed up their gear and headed down route 90 to meet their rivals the Rockford Icehogs. Coach Don Granato must have been on a roll all the way because the Wolves came out fighting, The two new acquisitions Brett Skinner and Clay Wilson played aggressive game, not missing a beat with their new teams. Robert Gherson in net for the night well, with a bolstered defense in front of him, he played with confidence. Dare I say it...hours before tonights game against the Quad Cities, the light at the end of the tunnel may not be a train, but the winter turn around for the Wolves. Last night there was a team playing on the ice not just a bunch of guys in Wolves uniforms. We can hope the same group come out fighting tonight against the Calgary prospects.

On the other side of the rink the Icehogs looked fierce despite having suffered several key injuries. During last nights post game show, Voice of the Hogs ,Mike Peck confirmed that Jack Skille has joined the walking wounded. Sustaining a concussion and has been placed on a “day to day “ list. The strength of the Hogs historically has been is that they have always played as a team. The intense effort to drive the game into overtime after being revived by Jimmy Sparrow's goal at 17:23 was evidence of this. The effort was incredible on the Hogs part, several times it looked as if we were going to head into OT. However, to sustain a lead under such pressure has to be a confidence builder for the Wolves going into tonights game.

The Wolves are 2 and 1 against Quad Cities we shall se how this new found chutzpah will hold up.

The NHL experience, at last and again.

against my old home town team the Buffalo Sabres. To give you a clue how long it had been since I saw the Sabres......

It was 1994 and Lindy Ruff was on the ice not behind the bench. Scotty Bowman was the GM and not with the Blackhawks and Rob Ray the Razor, bless him was protecting Alex the Great and not the color announcer. They were still playing in the Aud, a great old barn with rats the size of cats and cats the size of, well you get the idea.

Last night as we sat in the club level seats thinking how spoiled we were by the near glass seats we have at Wolves and Hogs games we enjoyed seeing the Hogs that had graduated to the “Big Show”. It was nice, the Hawks won and I even found a Tommy Hawk beanie for my mascot collection. But never fear my heart will forever belong to the minors.

Tale of Three Goalies Episode II

January 10th, Ondrej Pavelec is rumored to have a knee injury and is being evaluated for possible surgery. Brent Krahn is said to be down with the flu, presently making the rounds in the Wolves locker room felling players right and left. Our Rockford reporters are telling us the Wolves scratched 8 players last night, ouch! Time to line up the boys give them all flu shots then lay in a supply of Tamaflu for those that slip through the net.

Robert Gherson has been recalled from his Utah sojourn. If he wanted or needed ice time he is certainly getting it now. During last nights 3:1 loss to the Icehogs he faced 33 SOG turning way 30. I've always maintained you could measure the emotional state of a team by the expression of it's goalies eyes. In this photo Gherson does look a bit overwhelmed, or could it be the flu?

Right now things are a bit dire for the Chicago Wolves. The first pair of goalies in the harness Ondrej Pavlec and Brett Khran are down with injuries Pavelec may even face knee surgery according to some rumors. Last night Joe Motzko the Wolves most prolific scorer this year was having a very bad night. Mr. reliable missed shot after shot making us all in the stands wonder if he had become the latest victim of the flu galloping around the Allstate ice this year. That's when I saw one of my favorite subjects hit the ice, Chad Denny, I just love to follow this kid with the camera, a great line on the ice and a booming wrister of a shot. So with all the negativity blowing around this week I'm going to post a valentine, this one is for the Denny family and a more dedicated group of hockey fans you will never meet. Happy belated Christmas!

Sometimes you hear stories at work you have to share, this is one great one. Liza, a friend and fellow Rochester Amerks fan came bouncing into the office this morning with this story. It was the first time we had seen each other in the new year and after the well wishes were finished I asked about her husband Jeremy, die hard Peoria Riverman fan that he is. She lit up and told me this great marital tale. Liza and her husband live a block from Wrigley Field and one day just before New Years Day she came home to find Jeremy excited why? He had the "Best day of my life!" what had happened? Living one block and a straight shot from the entrance to Wrigley he had followed the ZAMBONI down the street on his way home from work.

Don Sanderson, Hamilton morns 21 year old Hockey Player

Don Sanderson's family of Hamilton Ontario is preparing to burry their 21 year old son all to soon. He died after a hitting the ice during a fight in a hockey game on December 12th , his fight for life lasted three weeks ending at 1:00 am on Friday morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and team mates at this time.

As readers of the sister blog to this .Powderhornhockey.blogspot.com will know in my other life I am an RN this gives me a perspective many other photographers do not have. It has also given me a great interest in a serious issue facing hockey, post concussion syndrome. Hockey in general has been slow to address this issue due to what most would call the macho culture of the sport. I can remember well as a student at RIT watching club hockey games how the teams would fight for the “right” not to wear helmets in 1978. Times have changed and although we see collegiate players now wearing full cages and the NHL wearing face shields concussions are still commonplace among players.

Two years ago I spoke with UHL veteran Brendan Tedstone regarding his mouthpiece. He proudly described it as a “guaranteed no concussion” piece of safety equipment. That lead me on a trail of looking into just what do these guys put into their mouths, most use nothing at all. Some a model at $1.98 seen flopping in and out of their mouths and a few a more elaborate model. The problem with the “no concussion” design Mr. Tedstone liked and some NHL players use is that is is difficult to breathe through. If it interferes with performance you are not going to get most players to use it regularly

A few months after talking to Tedstone, Kissane and I were in Traverse City at the Red Wing Rookie Tournament. One of the most impressive features of the tournament is the support staff. Out of site of the public is a legion of dentists, orthopedists and other specialists ready to care for injured athletes on a moments notice. Often I will meet these professionals as I photograph the NHL hopefuls along the glass. Once the doctors find out the redhead with the big lens is also an RN they are often willing to talk regarding medical issues players face such as post concussion syndrome. One day I was discussing mouth guards with an orthopedist and two players boomed into the glass inches from us. He then pointed to the smeared class with fire in his eyes and told me ( and I para phrase) “It's not mouth pieces, that helmet gave him no protection, find a chin strap that will stay on and that's the first step.” Every time as I photograph players by the glass looking at those helmets with their loose chinstraps I think of that passionate orthopedist. The main argument as I understand it against chin straps that will stay on is that in a fight is to hit a player with a helmet on is a virtual guarantee of a hand injury. Either a soft tissue injury requiring stitches or a fracture. I can understand that logic, however are there not more players involved in collisions, checks and other kinds of contacts that require head protection than are involved in on ice fights? Honestly, except for the “enforcers” the skilled players who job it has always been to protect the little guys pretty much not many other guys roll up their sleeves. It's time to refit chinstraps on the majority of players.

The issue of fighting will not be settled in this blog at this hour. The topic of post concussion syndrome is just being introduced here tonight. I assure readers it is only the beginning of discussion, information and interviews I plan to have on this emerging subject. I will of course continue to publish photos, including “contact” or fight photos, they are a hockey photogs daily bread. For until North American hockey changes it's game to a more “skilled” or "European” style game I will continue to record what I see fights and all.

Rockford Icehogs defeat Chicago Wolves 3:2

Tonights Wolves-IceHog game was a match of a different color . No team dominated the ice and both teams pushed each other for 60 minutes. I'll be concise, in my IMHO the Wolves played better as a team while the IceHogs had a goalie in Corey Crawford who in winning his 100the professional game was on, simply on. He was what made the winning difference. Crawford kept the Hogs in the game making save after save and should have been named first star of the game.

45 years ago the Bears ruled Wrigley Field!

Sports trivia: When was the last time a professional championship game was played at Wrigley Field? Who won it, Chicago or the visitors?

The answer is the Chicago Bears won the National Football Championship December 29, 1963, 14-10 over the New York Giants. The Super Bowl wasn't started till 1967. It was the last championship game the Bears played in until they won the Super Bowl in 1986.

The game was moved up to a 12:05 start by the National Football League after the Bears refused to move the game to Soldier Field. The NFL was concerned that the end of a long game could be played in the dark as Wrigley Field had no lights. Mike Crivello, age 26 at the time, lived about a block from Wrigley Field in the 1100 block of Addison. The morning dawned with a temperature of -8 F and winds gusting to 15 mph. Local radio reported that the Bears game was sold out and Crivello knew, from living in the area, that the city was cracking down on scalpers.

He headed out to mass at Trinity Lutheran Church with his wife. Passing the ticket office, he noticed a line for tickets. When he checked out what was happening, he discovered that the game wasn't sold out, but the remaining tickets were too expensive for Crivello. The ticket agent pointed to a man on the sidewalk, a scalper. “He'll sell you a ticket for face value,” the agent said, explaining that the weather was discouraging people from attending.

Crivello purchased three standing room only tickets at $4.00 each. It was a half-hour till game time.

Rousing his cousin Chris and another friend who did not make it, Crivello headed to the Waveland Avenue bleachers in his hunting camouflage. “It was cold and there was no food service in the bleachers,” Crivello said. The only protection from the wind and the bitter temperature in the bleachers was the men's room. Crivello remembers entering the men's room and seeing a man warming his bare feet over a heater.

Crivello remembers Giants Quarterback Y. A. Tittle's scoring first quarter drive. It culminated in a touch down pass to Frank Gifford. But the Monsters of the Midway, led by Larry Morris, hit Tittle as he was throwing later in the quarter. A second hit by Morris, on another play and Tittle's knee was injured. Although he finished the game, he was lost for part of the first half and he began throwing off his back foot for the remainder of the game.

Morris was able to intercept a Tittle pass moments after the second hit. His 61 yard return remains a Bears record. It setup a quarterback sneak touchdown by Billy Wade, tying the game. Going into the second quarter, Crivello remembers that the temperature was sending people home early. A Giants field goal sent the ball out of the stadium onto Waveland. A crowd of perhaps 100 people scrummed for the ball near the firehouse. The score was Giants 10, Bears 7 at the end of the half.

In the second half, with Tittle back on the field, Ed O'Bradovich intercepted a Giants pass. That setup Wade's second scoring run, giving the 14-10 lead to the Bears. Richie Petitbon finished the Giants chances when he intercepted a pass, the fifth Bears interception of the game, in the end zone with ten seconds remaining.

George Allen, the Bears defensive coordinator, received the game ball. Bears coach and owner George Hallas received the NFL coach of the year award. Morris was the Most Valuable Player. Among the other athletes in the contest were Johnny Morris and future Bears coach Mike Ditka. Crivello kept the game ticket and an aerial photograph of the game in a frame until last year when he gifted them to a football loving friend. “I still remember the ticket, SRO #96,” Crivello said.

Winter Classic- Wrigley in Winter Colors

The rink lies below, glistening in the sun. There is no ice there yet. That will come shortly. Already the Zamboni's have been dropped, literally, off the truck. On this morning, a cold wind blows. Looking at the stands for 41,000, you wonder how will those people survive this cold.

But Steve Alexander is happy. In the warmth of his rooftop club and the field across the street, his patrions will be able to knosh on cider, pizza and coffee inside, taking in the game as the weather allows on the rooftop deck. His arms wide, he says he is ready for the Winter Classic.

A veteran of the Greektown restaurant scene, Alexander says the rooftop gig has been the best place to work ever. He glides over to a wall, his speech is rapid and his excitement is viral, “here are pictures from the 1970's with the owner,” he says. He hardly allows a moment to examine the photos on the wall before racing elsewhere, the food is usually prepared outside in the summer he explains, talking rapidly.

“But, in January that won't be possible,” he explains, as he shows off the kitchen where the chili, mac and cheese and other winter favs will appear. “The staff is excited,” he explains, racing to the roof along a rear stair.

At the top of the stair, downtown glistens in the distance and an el train rumbles beneath us. Alexander is on the other side of the roof. Talking about what his guests will be seeing. Wrigley Field, frozen in snow and ice lies across the street and below. A rink runs from first to third base. It is quiet. A moment that is frozen.

Alexander is quiet for a moment, then his boots begin crushing the snow, “it will be 45 F here this weekend and this stuff will all melt,” he predicts. “Come here and look at this,” he is bursting with enthusiasm. Another kitchen, this is the summer kitchen. “And, we'll hang televisions from these poles too.”

Alexander rushes down a stairwell. Gasping to catch him, the sub-zero air is stinging my lungs. Alexander is a huge sports fan. At first, he says he doesn't understand hockey, but as he talks, he goes into a long discussion of the effects of constant hits on the player's body. He talks about Chicago Blackhawk players and Chris Chelios, the kid from the hood who did good.

“His parents were mall walkers and stopped by mom and dad's stand in the mall,” he explains. The old Greeks liked to talk to each other and grab a bite. They'd talk about their kid in the hockey league, Chris. Chelios, I explain, was assigned to the AAA Grand Rapids Griffins for conditioning. He might not play on New Year's Day. “Oh, too bad.” For a moment, Alexander is reflective.

He begins to talk again about the Cubs and the blessing of the business having this extra day of business. The city council had just approved the sale of tickets by the rooftops at its previous session. Although he had sold out, Alexander explained that prior to the approval, everything was tentative.

The poor economy is having its effect here too. Although Alexander has sold out, he says that some of the rooftops had tickets on the 20th. Tickets up here cost $300.00 USD each. For that the rooftop clubhouse Alexander runs opens an hour before the game till an hour after the game. All the food and beverage is provided.

The effort to be ready is exhausting. Alexander fields calls during the interview from supplier after supplier, arranging for the delivery of food, beer, soft drinks and other supplies. “Excuse me,” he apologizes, “I have to take this.” It is non-stop and there are more than ten days to go yet.

He says the rooftops host parties during concerts too, but that the view is terrible and it is by invitation of the owner (no income) for friends and clients. “We had to take the weather into consideration,” he says. He looks at the stands across the street. “People will be freezing if they stay outside long in this weather. They'll probably be going up (to the roof top view) and down (to the warmth of the clubhouse) a lot,” he predicts.

The building, originally a three-flat, was gutted to the walls. A similar project is occurring immediately next door. Inside, the walls are brick and mortar. Large windows keep the noise of the el train out, while pictures from Cubs history adorn the walls. Basically several floors of restaurants with bleachers on the top deck, only one apartment survives, on the first floor. And NO, you may not invite yourself up to the deck if you rent the apartment.

In the early days of Wrigley Field, the owners and tenants came up on the roof with lawn chairs and grills. Television gave the rooftops their romance, showing the rooftops and their occupants. It is a romance the National Hockey League hopes to capture. A little snow, some pictures of the rooftops with some cold people on them, and the ivy. You can see it now, in your minds eye.

Outdoor hockey at this level is about romance. The romance of a game played on ice. The romance of professional players, returning to their roots. It is a romance of the neighborhood kid, scoring the game winning goal or making the glove save at a critical moment-- at least in his head.

No Joy in Mudville, Hogs and Wolves loose.

It was not a good time to be a minor league hockey fan in Chicago last night. Both of our local teams the Chicago Wolves and the Rockford Icehogs lost to divisional rivals.

The Wolves snatched defeat from the jaws of victory letting a three goal lead slip away during the third period ultimately losing 5:3 to old rivals the Milwaukee Admirals. Admirals goalie Drew McIntyre who many Chicago fans will remember from his years in Manitoba turned away 30 SOG in the loss. While Chicago's Ondrej Pavelec was challenged by 25 SOG. Referee Ian Croft (#87) returned in stripes assigning Milwaukee 26/mi/10 infractions and Chicago 36 minutes for 11 inf.

The turning point of the game for the home team may have come at 15 seconds into the 3rd period when a fight started between Chicago's Mike Hoffman and Milwaukee's Nolan Yonkman. Both men were evenly matched in size and desire to dance, however like may on ice encounters it ended in injuries. It appears that Yonkman may have suffered momentary loss of consciousness hitting the ice and Hoffman a wrist injury. Both combatants were taken into the locker rooms for medical attention immediately after the incident. Although the role of the enforcer is a popular one with fans it needs to constantly be acknowledged how dangerous and difficult it can be. These men are not “goons” but skilled players who provide protection for the smaller line mates often at a high personal price. After Yonkman and Hoffman left the ice it simply seemed the Wolves's air had left it's collective balloon and 5 unanswered goals simply happened in the next 20 minutes.

The Wolves board a plane for Manitoba for Tuesday's game against the Moose. There they will meet old team mates Jason Krog and Gui Desbiens, both of whom are reportedly doing very well in the Manitoba system. Maybe some cold Canadian air, some hot Tim Horton's coffee and the Wolves will snap out of it. If not maybe Desbiens can check some sense into them.

The Icehogs also were also on the negative side last night facing the Iowa Chops losing 5:6. The Hogs had Antti Neimi in goal while the Chops had David LeNevau in the pipes.

No, it wasn't the best night to be a hockey fan in Chicago. The bright spot is that the Hawks don't play the Wild until tonight. Then there is the “Winter Classic” to look forward to in 4 days, minor league fans have something to live for.

Hogs Make Wolves howl winning 6:2

As the fog kept many Chicago fans homebound last night rather than making the 90 minute trip to Rockford, the team faced an attack by the Icehogs with a small crowd of supporters behind them. In the end Wolves goalie Ondrej Pavlec faced 21 SOG while Rockford's Crawford faced 32 turning away 29. The much anticipated match between enforcers Sean McMorrow and Mike Hoffman has been posponed for another day. McMorrow was listed as a scratch, better luck next game fight fans.

After following the trail of the transaction it turns out yes, indeed there may be something up but it may come down to yet another team folding. The Fresno Falcons were the Blackhawks ECHL (AA) farm team. They shut down suddenly on December 22nd and the Hawks needed a place for prospects. This lead to the second head scratcher.

Christmas morning and I'm up early. The sun is shining for the first time in a couple of days, there is a cup of coffee next to me, it may not be Tim Horton's but you know what, life is pretty darn good on this Christmas Day.

Last Sunday while covering the Rockford game I took a break to meet with friend and colleague, Kris. While we were chatting about lenses, children and hockey I asked her about something she mentioned in an earlier email. It seemed it had been Kris's turn to do the “locker room and bus food” shopping for the team the night before and it had been quite a run. Locker room food?

To those of us who are fans of the AAA and NHL teams this is going to seem like a supportive and amazing story but it is true for Kissane and I have heard it several times between the UHL and ECHL and now with the converted UHL/AHL Icehogs.

Two years ago on a cold winters night Kissane and I found ourselves in Dayton Ohio at a Gwenette Gladiators and Dayton Bombers game. After the game we met with dedicated fans and talked into the early morning hours. One of the topics of conversation was the extensive support the booster club gave to the players. This included furniture and appliances for apartments, and food for every bus trip (individually packaged of course) and “locker room food” at every game. We were simply astounded. Months later in Toledo we heard the same thing including a semi formal practice of families “adopting players”. Families only mind you, no puck bunnies need apply.

Last week was the first I had heard of it in the AHL, it is a practice continued from the UHL Icehogs of the past. Bless these boosters for their dedication to their team in providing them touches of home, food and support when these young men are on their own for possibly the first time in their lives. Yes they are adults being paid well to play a game we played on ponds as kids. But still, it is a lovely thing these families are doing for their teams. Often in smaller cities where the dollar is tighter these days like Dayton,Rockford and Toledo.

So Merry Christmas Kris and all boosters who work to support their teams and worthy causes at the same time. But you know what, that's hockey and on this beautiful Christmas morning life is good.

It was the week before Christmas, days before Hanukkah. The house was decorated, kiddies finished with school and packages wrapped. I looked at my stocking hung near the crackling fire. What did I see? But Santa Kevin Cheveldayoff had been there, a smiling goalie in a green helmet decorated with a star was waving at me from San Antonino telling me of a win and his "assignment from Dallas".

Yes Virgina, Bret Karhn is unpacking his bags for a longer stay. He started in goal for Chicago last night in San Antonino winning 2:1 turning away 35 of 36 shots against t him. Nice work for our Pro from Dover or Dallas as it were. Krahn is a bit of a second chance kid or so a bit of research shows. Last September he was signed with Dallas as a 3rd line back up to Marty Turko. He was to compete for the position with nettie familiar to those of us in the west -Tobias Stephan. (Needless to say it is my belief the Wolves have ultimately gotten the best part of this deal ending up with Krahn!) Krahn had left the Calgary system after seven years and being dogged by knee injuries.It's an old story goalies and knee injuries, Khan's started in 01', they cost him parts of two seasons . It was rumored in September that he would be finished with rehab and be able to return to play by December 08'.

Stephan? Well,he is in Dallas singing backup for Marty Turko, he can stay there. If indeed Dallas has loaned us a net minder they may be ready to take a chance on or one we can rehab in Chicago we seem to have a hot hand between the pipes. The world of sports loves a underdog, second chances and a good story it would be just Chevy's style to find one for us this year in Bret Krahn. Whether Krahn is here for a fortnight, month or the rest of the season he has shown desire and fire lets hope he also shows us a comeback.

Brent Krahan may have only been here for the weekend filling in for the rumored injured Dan Truple but the man did impress. Not only did the Wolves win handily 4:1 against San Antonio. Krahn produced several of the prettiest saves we have seen at the Allstate since the 07' playoffs.

A long weekend does not even a honeymoon make but in his one outing Brent Krahn stood on his head and performed the two tasks of the goalie beautifully, as a friend Jill put it so concisely, see the puck, stop the puck . Considering the current uncertainty in Chicago nettie camp it begs the question to GM Kevin Cheveldayoff, "Chevy can we keep him a little longer, please?"

Chicago Wolves won in the cornfields of against the Iowa chops in a 3:2 shoot out, Robert Gherson was in goal for the Wolves. That is the basic fact, now consider this bit of news that cam across the internet today at 5:54 today.

The Chicago Wolves had signed yet another goalie 26 year old Brent Krahn. Krahn is a member of the 2000 draft class and was a first round draft choice, taken 9th over all. He has spent his entire career in the Calgary organization and was most recently with the Las Vegas Wranglers. Nice, but most interestingly he has been signed for a weekend contract. This leads to lots of speculation on chat rooms, boards and blogs. Is there a trade in the winds, another injury in the goalie pool or is somebody about to be released? It could be anywhere in the food chain, Atlanta,Chicago or Gwinette,only time will tell what is up.

Robert Gherson did well against the Chops tonight, tomorrow the Wolves will be in Rockford facing their biggest rival the Icehogs. Will Coach Granato go with the hot hand or stay with his policy of alternating goalies and start Turple, or slide the new guy in? It's Friday night one game and one win down of a three game weekend, and some good gossip in the wind, what fun !

Wednesday night Wolves fans left the Allstate Arena worried, very worried. Was it the trip to Turple by one of his own team mates? No, The shelling of Gherson? Not quite. The fact that every line change resembled a flock of peewees tumbling out for their big chance? No, it was the general don't seem to care, don't wanna care, you mean I should care attitude that hung over the bench like a cloud. It was like someone had opened a locker sealed from 05' and the bad karma leaked out. Driving to the game, frankly I expected that if the Wolves continued in this pattern it would be a blow out in favor of the Icehogs.

When I arrived at the Allstate the game was already two minutes old and what lovely sight greeted me? Not one but two Wolves in the Rockford crease waving their rumpuses in Antti Niemi's face.By the time I had gotten to my seat opened my bag Spencer Machacek had drilled the net for the first goal of the game. It would prove to be the first of 6 goals for the Wolves. Possibly the most amazing statistic of the game, that for 6 goals, 11 players awarded assists and three fights no Gordie Howe hat tricks were earned. Glory enough for all!

There is an easy explanation for the turnaround of play among the Wolves.It was rumored that Thrashers coach John Anderson basically told players on the parent club that unless improvements were made big changes were coming, and no one was safe. Player movments up and down would be possible, golaies could be coming and going and possible trade announcements would be forthcoming.

Keystone Cops Hockey, Peoria out shoots Wolves 7:6

It was not a good night to be a nettie in Rosemont Wednesday. By the middle of the second period both teams were forced to pull their shell shocked goalies. Peoria's Ben Bishop was exchanged for Marek Schwartz after 29:05 minutes and Chicago's Robert Gherson limped to the box replaced by Dan Turple after 31:04. Now, that has to be an AHL record both teams replacing both goalies within 121 seconds of each other.

There are many fingers possibly being pointed in both locker rooms, at goalies, no question they had bad nights, the first goal Gherson let in, he looked like he had gone out for pizza he was so far out of the crease. The others he lacked defensive cover. The same could be said of Peoria. The refereeing of the game by Shaun Davis (31), was spotty at best, a controversial penalty shot would prove to be the winning goal. In short bad juju just flew all over the arena.

Tomorrow night the Wolves will face the Rockford Icehogs. They will need to shake off the loss and come out breathing fire to do well against their biggest rivals. Somehow I envision captain's practices until the team throws up.

Sunday Morning, at Tim Hortons...life is good.

It's early on this last day of Thanksgiving weekend and being of the religious persuasion, I rose at the crack of dawn and drove to Tim Horton's for a cup of coffee and a pair of Tim Bits's 20's for the ride home. One for us and one for WK the penalty time keeper for the Wolves. The last time he had a box of Timmies the Wolves won so it has become a bit of a tradition to bring Timmies home when on the road. I tell the earnest young man behind the counter the destination of one of the boxes of Bit's and I don't think he believes me until I empty the box of the Timmies into a zip lock bag for the ride home. Then the moment comes, the XL coffee with cream and 4 Splenda is placed in my hand and it is to the table I go to enjoy what is arguably the finest and freshest cup of coffee in the world, OK, North America.

It has been four days since Kissane and I packed up the van had headed to Rochester to see the family on Wed for a weekend of turkey, family stories and not much hockey. Quite a change for us, although my niece Kristine did tell us about a league goalie she knew from Qswego State who's big mojo was to tape his stick in the nude in the locker room before games-TMI ! I did manage to catch a period of the Amerks-Manchester game on TV Thursday night. For a team that supposedly is in at the bottom they looked pretty good. Friday against Lake Erie they looked even better winning despite Karl Stewart , bless his heart getting a tripping penalty at the wrong time giving Cleveland a two man advantage. Rochester Goalie Chris Beckford -Tsu managed to stand on his head for two minutes and save the day. Something many of us can remember him doing from his time in Peoria.

My cup grows empty and I promised the family I would be back in an hour to have a last meal, pack the van and be on the road early as the weather forecast has bad tidings along the Great Lakes. With luck WK will have his box of Tim Bits at 3:00 at today's game, be nice to him and he just may give you one. Mine will be long gone by noon.

Manchester Moncharchs come to Chicago, King them!

Last night the hockey action in the Allstate Arena turned ugly. The Manchester Monarchs came to town and dominated the Chicago Wolves from the opening puck drop, winning 7:2. Scoring twice on PP and one shortie, it was obvious they had come out to play hard against a team they hoped to see later in the year, possibly the Calder Cup finals. It was not Chicago goalie Dan Turple's night to shine, Coach Don Granato pulled him at 15:04 in the second and put crowd favorite Robert Gherson in place between the pipes. It would not be his karma to escape the Manchester front line as Scott Parce and Marty Murray would drill the final two goals in under his watch.

Manchester's 5th goal was scored by a familiar face from a favorite place, Justin Azevedo. At 5'7" and 183 pounds this W. Lorne Ontario native and Kitchner Ranger (04'-08') strutted his stuff as an Atlanta invitee at the Red Wing Rookie Tournament in Traverse City in 06'. Even as a 17 year old he was aggressive in a face off and in front of the net. It was a pleasure to see him on ice again, all be it in a uniform with a Kings crest on it.

The Wolves old and dear rivals the Grand Rapids were in town last night for a rare inter divisional game. Once upon a time Grand Rapids and the Wolves were the biggest of rivals. However since the redrawing of divisional lines years ago these two old rivals now see each other twice a year and the old feelings see more like old flames meeting at a bus stop rather than the regular brawls on ice of old. This time as old friends met it was the Wolves who shelled the Griffins goalies out of the net and sent them home packing 6:3. Her are some images of the game:

More Zebras needed!

Ex- Wolf enforcer Andre Deveaux and current Tronto Marlie has received a 5 game suspension for his actions in a game last weekend against the Manitoba Moose.

As the event has been described Deveaux delivered a resounding but clean hit to Moose Nolan Bamgartner drilling him into the boards in font of the Manitoba bench. What happened next is what the suspension was given for, after the hit Deveaux has been described as "kneeing" Bamgartner as he lay on the ice, knocking his helmet off and kicking him in the face. Although he was able to return to the game Bamgartner suffered cuts to his face. Deveaux was given 2 minutes in the box for a roughing minor by referee Kyle Rehnar. Marlie coach Greg Gilbert wisely decided not to ice his enforcer for the remainder of the game.

Just as concerning as the hit and possible injury to the player involved is the speculation that the light penalty dealt on the ice is due to refree Kyle Rehnar not having a clear view of the incident. Again this brings up the argument for a second referee in the AHL. Until the league ponys up the cost for a second referee just like the big show it will be relegated to a bus league where incidents like this can continue to give the AHL it's often deserved "Slap Shot" reputation. Yes the AHL is the proving ground for coaches, players and refrees. It is past time for the standard of rules enforcement to be the same for the AHL as the NHL. If this truley is a devlopemental league, take devlopement seriously in all fcets of the game including the zebra herd.

Syracuse Crunch downs Wolves 4:2

I admit it when I'm wrong, the Wolves lost to the Crunch last night but, not only were they not spanked they notched two count em' two power play goals. Joe Motzko at 2:01 in the first period and Joey Crabb at 15:45 in the second. Showing the light at the end of the tunnel may not be a train for Chicago. However not to belabor the point both our young goalies need more of a back up, until these guys find their confidence the more experienced defence has to take it up several levels. Last night Robert Gherson looked decidedly lonely in the defensive zone as the water bottle popped and the light went on. He doesn't need his hand held but defence is a three man line.

Penalties last night were lopsided Kerry Fraser's son Ryan (14) was referee, Derek Sylvester and Jeff Walker served as linesmen. Chicago was tagged for 40 min/12 inf and Syracuse 20 min/10 inf. .Game tapes show an excited Chicago Coach Don Granato discussing the penalty to Syracuse center Nikota Filatov at 20:00 for elbowing with Fraser. Obviously something prompted the usually cool Granato to express himself passionately to the officiating staff at 20:00 in the third. It will be interesting to see if there is any footage of what caused the "elbowing" call and the ensuing exchange between coach and on ice officials.

The Chicago Wolves Power Play is so bad they almost lost to the Rochester Americans a 2/11 team by going 0/6 on the PP in a SHOOT OUT.

It is time to look at the game plan here, something is very wrong.
